La Libertad brings together the beach, local and national history, and views of the city and beach in a clear local theme. When planning your trip, it helps to first decide whether you would like to focus on the beach, historical collections, or local cultural sites.
Beach and City Views
Playa de La Libertad is located in the canton’s main town and is 500 meters long. The Mirador La Caleta, in the 10 de Agosto sector, offers views of the city and the beach. The two places offer different highlights: Playa de La Libertad is a specific stretch of beach, while the mirador offers views of both the city and the beach.
Local History and Collections
Museo Casa León was built in 1991 at the initiative of Ecuadorian visual artist León Ricaurte. It displays artistic and everyday objects from Ecuador’s pre-Columbian, colonial, and contemporary periods. Its timeline therefore spans several periods in the country’s history; the objects bring together art and everyday life.
La Casa de los 100 Años has a different focus, expressly centered on the town. The municipal museum on the Malecón in the canton of La Libertad preserves part of the town’s history. Fishing equipment on display includes net weights, weights for divers, anchors, and oyster picks. The museum also displays objects and figures from the Huancavilca and Valdivia cultures. The collection ranges from specific fishing equipment to objects and figures from two named cultures; this offers a different perspective from the objects spanning multiple eras at Museo Casa León.
Santuario Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza is located on Avenida 9 de Octubre, opposite the local town hall.
Another Beach in the Canton
In the wider canton area, Playa de Cautivo lies to the northwest, near the La Carioca sector. It is one kilometer long, making it twice as long as Playa de La Libertad in the main town. Swimming and beach sports such as volleyball, soccer, and surfing are possible at Playa de Cautivo.
More Highlights of the Guayas Destination
The wider Guayas destination offers other places with different themes. On the MalecĂłn in Nobol, AsociaciĂłn de Servicios TurĂsticos Fluviales Nachita and ASONOB offer canoe trips on the river. The historic ensemble in the Barrio Las Peñas neighborhood of Guayaquil comprises 36 houses, including galleries and workshops; the houses preserve colonial-style architecture. In the cloud forest of Recinto La Esperanza Alta in the canton of Bucay, there are more than 40 waterfalls, visited by local and foreign tourists.
