Orchid tours, hummingbirds and cacao give a trip to Mindo different focal points. There are also annual festivals and a regional setting that extends from the biosphere reserve to the nearby protected forest. When planning, it is worth distinguishing these nature and cultural themes: some activities are tours with a specific time frame, while others are tied to a particular season.
Cloud Forest and Regional Setting
Mindo is located within the ChocĂł Andino de Pichincha Biosphere Reserve. Bosque Protector Mindo Nambillo lies in a cloud forest valley near Mindo; about 19,000 hectares of the area are protected.
Orchids, Hummingbirds and Birds
Guided tours of the orchid collection are offered at JardĂn de OrquĂdeas in Mindo. The listed price for a tour is about US$1.50. Before your visit, check whether tours are currently offered and what the price is. This is especially useful if you want to build the tour into your day’s schedule.
JardĂn Nathaly offers a different focus: dozens of hummingbirds can be observed and photographed there. If you are interested in orchids, JardĂn de OrquĂdeas offers a tour of a collection; at JardĂn Nathaly, the focus is on observing and photographing hummingbirds. If you want to visit the second garden, check in advance whether visits are currently possible.
At Christmas, visitors can take part in the annual Conteo Navideño de Aves (Christmas Bird Count). This makes it a seasonal highlight, unlike the garden visits. Before your trip, check the current participation requirements if the bird count is a key part of your plans.
Make Your Own Cacao Products
At Maya Chocolate, visitors can take part in a hands-on tour lasting about an hour. They learn about the history of cacao, roast cacao beans, peel and grind them by hand, and make their own chocolate paste using local ingredients. The family-run factory is at the entrance to Mindo. The experience combines background information with several practical steps and gives you an approximate one-hour guide for planning your time. Before you travel, check whether the tour is currently running.
Festivals and When to Visit
Every May, Mindo celebrates the anniversary of its founding as a parish. The patron saint festivities include a novena held in various neighborhoods, a parade, a mass in honor of the Virgen del Cisne, and cultural and artistic activities. A walk from the “Y” of Mindo to the church is also part of the program. The walk and the parade should be understood as separate events in the program.
The events offer different guidance when choosing when to visit: the anniversary is celebrated in May, while the Conteo Navideño de Aves takes place at Christmas. The hands-on tour at Maya Chocolate, which lasts about an hour, offers an approximate time frame for a single experience.
