Manta can be explored through several distinct themes: museums with archaeological collections and contemporary art, beaches along the coast, and places where fishing traditions are on display. Visitors choosing this destination can weigh up its cultural, beach, and ocean-related attractions. Particularly distinctive are the museums’ varied areas of focus and the different ways they connect with the Pacific.

Museums between archaeology and everyday culture

The Museo Manta tells the story of the Manteño culture, dated from 500 to 1532 AD, and the Bahía culture, dated from 500 BC to 500 AD. Alongside these historical themes, the museum displays contemporary works by Ecuadorian artists. Its collection comprises more than 824 archaeological objects and 65 works from the art collection; collection figures may change over time. A library, spaces for temporary exhibitions, and a toy library are also part of what it offers. Check which services are currently available before your visit.

The Museo Centro Cultural Manta focuses on archaeology: it is located opposite Playa El Murciélago, and its exhibition halls house more than 1,100 archaeological objects related to the history of the region’s pre-Columbian cultures. The Museo Municipal Etnográfico Cancebí features objects that reflect the everyday lives of rural residents, the Montubios, and the Cholo fishers of Manabí. The museum is in the center of Manta, in a historic building dating from 1908. Its collection includes agricultural tools, household items, and replicas of traditional homes. The museums thus differ both in their collections and in the themes they highlight.

Cultural landmarks in the urban landscape

Manta’s Parque Central is home to the Monumento a la Silla Manteña. It is a replica of the U-shaped seats used by the elite of the Manteño culture between 500 and 1534 AD.

Beaches and water sports along the coast

Playa El Murciélago is described as having golden sand, warm water, and a particularly favorable natural setting. Conditions at the beach may vary. Manta’s municipal tourism information lists 47 kilometers of coastline and 15 beaches; activities it mentions at the beaches include swimming, surfing, and other water sports. Available facilities may also differ.

A provincial information source reports that extreme sports are available at the beaches of Santa Marianita and San Mateo. Alongside the activities generally mentioned for Manta’s beaches, this also highlights two places associated with this broad range of activities. The beach information refers to different places within the municipality, not to a uniform offering at every beach.

By the sea: Barbasquillo and Playita MĂa

The EspigĂłn Barbasquillo is a stone structure that extends out into the sea from Barbasquillo beach. Visitors can take walks, fish for sport, and enjoy panoramic ocean views there. This combination sets the place apart from descriptions that focus on beach conditions or water sports.

The Mercado de Mariscos is located in Playita Mía, on the Vía Puerto–Aeropuerto in Manta. The market connects visitors with the variety of products from the Pacific and the city’s fishing tradition. Check the location and current operating status before traveling there.
