The beaches of Data Villamil stretch for approximately 2.5 km; at the Estero in Recinto Data de Villamil, the focus shifts to mangroves and birdwatching. The Monasterio de Santa Teresa, with its collection of stained-glass windows, is another highlight. The coast, nature, and religious art thus offer three distinct ways to explore Data de Villamil.
The beach and the regional coastline
The beaches of Data Villamil stretch for approximately 2.5 km. A report from 2018 mentions swimming at these beaches as an option. In the wider region, the beaches form part of a continuous 13.25 km stretch of coastline from the Punta Chapoya sector in General Villamil Playas to the mouth of the Estero de Data. These figures describe different scales: around 2.5 km for the beaches of Data Villamil and 13.25 km for the longer regional stretch.
The Estero and birdwatching
The Estero, also known as the Data de Villamil waterway, is located in Recinto Data de Villamil. Surrounded by mangroves, the waterway offers opportunities to observe birds, including great egrets, snowy egrets, cormorants, frigatebirds, and curlews. Compared with the beach, the Estero is focused on nature and birdwatching.
The Monasterio de Santa Teresa
The Monasterio de Santa Teresa was founded in May 1975 and has a collection of stained-glass windows depicting themes such as the Trinity, the Incarnation of Christ in Mary, and Saint Teresa of Ávila. Alongside the coast and mangroves, the collection adds a cultural dimension, with its focus on religious art.
Guayas as the wider setting
The wider destination of Guayas offers other distinct cultural and nature experiences. In Nobol, the Santuario Nacional Narcisa de Jesús, a pilgrimage destination, stands on the banks of the Río Daule; the incorrupt body of Santa Narcisa de Jesús is kept there. Also in Nobol, Hacienda San José is a place to visit because Narcisa de Jesús was born there on October 29, 1832. On the Malecón in the canton of Nobol, the Asociación de Servicios Turísticos Fluviales Nachita and ASONOB offer canoe trips on the Río Daule.
A different perspective on nature is offered by the cloud forest in Recinto La Esperanza Alta, in the canton of Bucay. It includes more than 40 waterfalls visited by local and international tourists. In Guayaquil, Barrio Las Peñas comprises 36 historic houses, including galleries and workshops; the houses preserve colonial-style architecture. In central Guayaquil, Parque Seminario provides a refuge for the famous green iguana and brings together history, nature, and tradition.
