El Progreso can be explored on different scales: cultural and historical sites are located in the center, while paths in the surrounding area pass through vegetation zones and connect several named destinations. The ruins of the former hacienda and sugar factory, along with a signposted cycling route, offer different starting points for planning a trip. This makes it possible to consider central points of interest and regional routes on San Cristobal separately.

Historic sites in the center

The ruins of the former El Progreso hacienda and sugar factory are located in the center of El Progreso. Their former use gives them a clear connection to the history of the town. Casa del Ceibo, which is one of El Progreso’s tourist attractions, is also in the center. For orientation, these are two distinct points of interest: the remains of the former hacienda and Casa del Ceibo. If you would like to visit either site, check access arrangements in advance.

Architectural details of Quinta El Ceibo

At Quinta El Ceibo, the treehouse room combines an unusual height with a striking approach: it is 15 meters above the ground and can be reached via a suspension bridge more than 28 meters long. The height describes the room itself, while the bridge’s length describes how to reach it. The architectural features of Quinta include parts of buildings made from reused materials such as beer bottles, crates and discarded tires. The grounds contain the remains of a sugar factory that once operated there and are considered historical evidence of the Galápagos Islands. This brings together the treehouse room’s distinctive features and traces of former industrial use on the same grounds.

Paths and destinations in the surrounding area

On the way to Laguna de El Junco, visitors pass through several vegetation zones and the agricultural settlement of El Progreso before reaching a viewpoint with a wide panorama. Plan this as a regional route with several stops, not as a short visit to a single place in the town center. The sequence of stops connects landscape and settlement.

In the wider region, a paved road corridor connects Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, El Progreso, Cerro Verde and Playa de Puerto Chino; the corridor includes a signposted cycling route. Unlike the route to the lagoon, the key feature here is the connection between several places, while the route to the lagoon is defined by vegetation zones and the viewpoint. Check the condition of the road surface and signage before planning, as both can change.

Casa del Ceibo and the ruins of the former hacienda are in the center of El Progreso; the route to Laguna de El Junco and the road corridor are in the surrounding region.
