From Guaranda’s seven hills, you can see the city with its distinctive tiled roofs. The historic center, the Centro Cultural Indio Guaranga, and events associated with Carnaval offer different ways to explore the city: architecture, archaeological collections, and public festivities. This can help you decide which focus should shape your stay.

Historic Center and Cityscape

Guaranda was declared a heritage site of Ecuador in 1997. The historic center includes houses built with local materials in a style typical of the early 20th century, as well as some 19th-century buildings. As a result, architectural features from different periods stand side by side.

The streets also shape the impression: Convención de 1884, García Moreno, 7 de Mayo, 9 de Abril, 10 de Agosto, Sucre, Rocafuerte, and Olmedo are narrow and paved with stone. If you are interested in architecture, you can consider not only the houses and their local materials but also the streets’ width and paving. This adds a view of public space to the perspective on the buildings.

Around Parque Libertador, Guaranda’s central park, are the cathedral, city hall, provincial government, and provincial court. Together, these buildings show Guaranda both as a religious place and as the seat of municipal and provincial institutions. They complement the view of historic architectural styles with the public functions of the city center.

Culture and Collections

The Centro Cultural Indio Guaranga houses a museum with archaeological finds attributed, among others, to the Valdivia Manteña, Guangala, and Puruhá cultures. The center also has an art gallery featuring works by various artists. This brings together two different ways to engage with culture: archaeological finds and their cultural associations, alongside works of art. If you plan to visit the museum or gallery, ask about the current displays before your visit.

Carnaval and Public Spaces

Guaranda’s Carnaval includes comparsas, pregones, contrapuntos, public dances, and a festival of typical foods. During Carnaval, artists from Ecuador and abroad perform at Plaza Roja. These elements bring together different aspects of the festivities, from artistic performances and dances to typical foods.

A monument in Parque Echeandía–Plaza Roja commemorates General Manuel de Echeandía, who was from Guaranda.

Plaza del Carnaval is located at the southern entrance to the city. It was built for cultural and civic events as well as artistic shows. Alongside the festivities at Plaza Roja, Guaranda therefore has a square specifically intended for public and cultural events.

Travel Dates and Hotel Search

When choosing your travel dates, the main consideration is the difference between the historic cityscape and the Carnaval performances. The architecture and streets define Guaranda itself; artists perform at Plaza Roja during Carnaval. This can help you decide whether the festival dates or exploring the city’s urban character should guide your plans.
