Boca de Yuma Bay is suitable for fishing, boat trips and swimming. The town also has a small harbor and beaches considered secluded. This offers a clear starting point for planning your trip: should your stay focus mainly on the coast, or are you also interested in historical traces and nearby destinations? Boca de Yuma brings these themes together, although they are not all found in the same place.

Coast, Bay and Pier

The activities in the bay appeal to different interests: fishing, boat trips and swimming each offer a different reason to explore the coast. The small harbor is part of the town’s character. A tourist pier for fishing and tourism was also inaugurated in Boca de Yuma. The pier was inaugurated in 2023; in July 2026, APORDOM reported further work on it.

Traces of Coastal History

Traces of coastal history in Boca de Yuma include a fort and the remains of a coastal cannon. The cannon served to protect the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia in Higüey. A cannon recovered from a shipwreck in 1877 has been located in Boca de Yuma Lighthouse Park since 1997. The dates mark two separate milestones: its recovery in 1877 and its location in the park in 1997. Local lore adds a pirate story to these historical themes: the ship of the pirate Cofresí is said to have taken refuge in caves around Boca de Yuma. Cofresí was shot in Puerto Rico in 1826. The cave story is presented as local lore, making it a different way of engaging with the past alongside the preserved structures and recovered cannon.

Nearby Excursions

There are also destinations of various kinds around Boca de Yuma. Castillo de San Rafael del Yuma is considered a destination for excursions in the municipality of San Rafael del Yuma and is about 10 km from Boca de Yuma. Parque Nacional del Este is a few kilometers from Boca de Yuma and is considered one of the largest nature parks in the Dominican Republic. The destinations differ in their focus: one is a castle to visit, the other a nature park. So, when choosing, it’s worth considering not only the distance but also the kind of destination you’d like to include in your trip.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Trip

If you’re looking for hotels in Boca de Yuma, first consider whether you want your trip to focus on the town itself or also include nearby destinations. The bay and coastal character offer a different focus from the history of the fort and cannons; the castle and nature park are outside the town and appeal to different interests. Planning starts with a specific question: should Boca de Yuma feature on your travel wish list mainly for its coast, its historical traces, or nearby destinations as well?
