Location and visitor access

The Reserva Científica Loma Quita Espuela is about 15 km northwest of San Francisco de Macorís and is part of the Cordillera Septentrional. It is in the city’s surrounding area, not within the destination itself. The distance and direction help you locate the protected area in relation to the city; its connection to the Cordillera describes its landscape context.

Visitor access to the Reserva CientĂfica Loma Quita Espuela extends only as far as the buffer zone. Take this limit into account when planning and do not assume that visitors can go beyond it. Confirm local conditions before traveling and finalizing your visit.

Routes to the Reserva

Three main routes lead to the Reserva: from San Francisco de Macorís to Rancho Abajo, from San Francisco to La Bajada, and via La Peña to Ramonal, continuing from there to La Bajada. The descriptions differ mainly in the destinations and intermediate places they name. Rancho Abajo is part of the first option; La Bajada is named in the other two routes.

Ramonal is part of the third option: the route first goes via La Peña to Ramonal and then continues to La Bajada. When preparing your route, therefore, note the full itinerary rather than focusing only on the shared endpoint of two options. Check current road conditions before setting out.

Walk to the summit

The summit of Loma Quita Espuela can be reached via the southern slope from the San Francisco de Macorís–La Bajada road. The uphill walk takes about three hours. This estimate applies to the uphill leg, not the entire journey or the round trip. Add the return walk to your time estimate, and confirm local conditions before setting out. This lets you account for the walking time as a separate part of your plans, apart from the drive along the named routes.

Transport address in San Francisco de MacorĂs

Metro Servicios TurĂsticos is located in San Francisco de MacorĂs, at Calle Salcedo 144, on the corner of Santa Ana. Office details and opening hours may change; check both before your visit. The address provides a specific reference point in the city that you can include in your plans in advance.

Accommodation and excursion planning

Choosing where to stay and planning a visit answer different questions. For the visit, consider the visitor access limit, the route you choose, and—if you plan to walk to the summit—the uphill walking time. Check the relevant local conditions before making plans based on them.
