The Gudenå, Denmark’s longest river, shapes the landscape of Skanderborg. The area also features large forests, lakes, streams, hills and valleys. You can explore Skanderborg Lake by canoe or boat, and visit the islands of Æbelø and Sct. Helene, which are open to visitors. Æbelø has a landing jetty, and the island can be visited. However, overnight stays are not permitted there. Water access and equipment are seasonal; check what is available for your preferred travel dates.

Lakes, River and Swimming Spots

There are several options for swimming. Dyrehavens Søbad on Skanderborg Lake is a family-friendly bathing spot that invites you to swim all year round. Water quality and algae conditions vary by season. The modern municipal swimming pool has a pool, diving facilities and a sauna, as well as water sports and access to the lake. You can go kayaking and use SUP boards there. Opening arrangements and water conditions may change; check them before your visit.

Nature Themes in the Forest

At Anebjerg Forest, you can explore climate, the environment and biodiversity through interactive and interpretive features. Five listening benches offer podcasts lasting 5 to 10 minutes about various forest processes and themes. You can choose a short audio feature or explore the interpretive features as a thematic addition. Another way to experience the landscape actively is Baneskoven in Skanderborg, which has a 5 km blue mountain biking trail for different skill levels. Red and black loops are being developed on an ongoing basis. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Museums, Mills and Local History

Museum Skanderborg is responsible for the entire cultural history of Skanderborg Municipality and comprises four museum departments and six archives. At the Øm Abbey Museum, you can see an abbey described as Denmark’s best-illuminated medieval abbey. It also displays numerous artefacts and skeletons from extensive archaeological excavations. Check current opening arrangements before your visit.

The Museum at Gl. Rye Mill preserves the original interior and equipment of the mill and sawmill in its permanent exhibition. Exhibition themes include glassmaking in Glarbo in the 16th century and wooden shoe production, which once brought prosperity to Gl. Rye. Gl. Rye Mill is a Dutch gallery windmill, also known as a smock mill, built as a grain mill in 1872. Here, local history, craftsmanship and milling technology come together without blurring the different periods: the mill dates from the 19th century, while glassmaking in Glarbo goes back to the 16th century.

Church, Bunker and Festival

The Slotskirke in Skanderborg remained as a parish church when Skanderborg Castle was demolished. Parts of the church’s original furnishings have been preserved, including pew ends bearing the royal coat of arms and a pulpit. The Skanderborg Bunkers Museum covers bunker construction, the duties of Luftwaffe generals, the top-secret ENIGMA cipher machine, the occupation period and everyday life during the occupation. Access is seasonal; check visiting arrangements before planning your museum visit.

Smukfest, also known as Skanderborg Festival or Denmark’s Most Beautiful Festival, is a Danish music festival. It takes place every summer in Skanderborg’s Dyrehave on the second weekend of August. If you are planning a visit, check the dates and programme for your chosen year.

A Look at the Surrounding Area

Near the railway town of Ry, in the area around Skanderborg, lies Himmelbjerget. From its observation tower, you can look out over Julsø, the forests and the surrounding landscape. The site also offers insights into the history of the development of democracy. Check access and facilities before setting out.
