Swimming is permitted at two beaches on Hampen Sø: on the west side and the north side. If you are planning a stay by the water, these are the specific places where swimming is allowed. The lake covers 76 hectares; the part known as Storesø is up to 13 to 14 metres deep. The nutrient-poor lake is one of Denmark’s cleanest lakes. The depth figure refers to Storesø, while swimming is permitted at the two beaches mentioned.

A 5-kilometre walking trail also runs around Hampen Sø. This means you can enjoy a visit to the lake in different ways: you can head for the designated swimming spots or make the walk the focus of your visit. The trail’s length gives you a specific basis for planning, without requiring an assumed walking time.

Palsgård Skov: Forest and Open Landscape

Palsgård Skov covers 1,100 hectares and is an old heathland plantation. The landscape is not made up solely of conifers: it also includes oaks and beeches, as well as raised bogs, meadows and dry grasslands. Forested areas therefore sit alongside open habitats. Roe deer and red deer live throughout Palsgård Skov. Most of the forest belongs to Natura 2000 area No. 53; this designation applies to most of the area, not to the entire area as a whole.

Two trails are worth considering when planning routes through the landscape. The Hærvejsruten walking trail runs through the eastern part of Palsgård Skov and through Tingdalskoven. This describes its route through both forest areas, while the 5-kilometre trail around Hampen Sø is a separate option with a clearly stated, shorter distance. When choosing your outings, you can distinguish the specific length of the lake circuit from the route taken by the Hærvejsruten.

Trails with a History

Den Skæve Bane runs right through Hampen. This nature-oriented recreational trail follows a former railway line and is now used for recreation. The entire route is 79 kilometres long and can be covered on foot or by bicycle. When planning, it is important to distinguish between the section through Hampen and the total length: the 79 kilometres describes the entire route, not just the section through the town. You can therefore regard the trail as part of a wider interest in routes without equating the section through the town with the full route.

The Hærvejsruten and Den Skæve Bane also represent different routes: the former is described as running through the eastern part of Palsgård Skov and Tingdalskoven, while the latter runs right through Hampen and follows a former railway line. This distinction helps you understand the trails based on their described routes, rather than treating them as a single route.

Church and Recurring Celebrations

Hampen Kirke dates from 1957 and was built to plans by architect Søren Vig-Nielsen. It is whitewashed and stands high on a hill on the Jyske Højderyg. Its year of construction, the architect’s attribution and its location each provide a distinct point of reference: the building’s history and its prominent position on the ridge.

Hampen’s events calendar includes an annual Fastelavn celebration and the regularly recurring Amerikanerdag gathering for American cars. If you would like to include one of these celebrations in your trip, check the specific date in advance. This lets you plan a visit around the event without confusing its annual or regular recurrence with a specific event date.
