Sunds offers paths by the water and through the municipal plantation, bathing areas and fishing opportunities. The routes vary considerably in length; there are also traces of local history and a glimpse of nature at Sunds Sø. You can shape your stay around the themes that interest you most.
Paths around Sunds Sø and through the plantation
Sunds Sø covers 127 hectares and is Denmark’s largest heath lake. A 5.5-kilometre path leads all the way around the lake and is suitable for walking or running. In Sunds Municipal Plantation, there is a marked red walking route measuring 1.7 kilometres. The plantation covers 50 hectares and includes heathland and meadows. This makes it easy to choose the route that suits your preferred distance: the plantation route is considerably shorter than the loop around the lake.
Fishing is possible at Sunds Sø. From the municipal plantation, there is also access to free fishing in Sunds Nørreå. If you want to fish at the lake, check the fishing regulations before your trip. There are designated opportunities for free camping in the plantation; observe the local fire and camping conditions.
Swimming and nature by the lake
The Strandparken bathing area at Sunds Sø has a sandy beach, a picnic shelter, benches, outdoor showers and toilets. As bathing conditions vary by season, it is advisable to check them before your visit. There is a municipal bathing water site on the east shore of Sunds Sø.
A small population of the rare, protected plant gulgrøn brasenføde grows by the lake. Birdlife is also part of the natural landscape: during an earlier survey, 80 different bird species were recorded at and around Sunds Sø within a short period. This figure describes an earlier observation period, not a current population count.
Church, railway and community projects
The present-day Sunds Church was inaugurated on 12 December 1897. Around the year 1200, a stone church without a tower stood on the same site; it was 18 metres long, 8 metres wide and 3 metres high. The present church has a simple Romantic architectural style, with round-arched windows and a flat beamed ceiling. The two church descriptions give the town a long history rooted in the same location.
The railway line’s former use is also part of Sunds’ local history. In 1995, the disused Herning–Viborg railway line was converted into the Alhedestien cycling and walking trail. Alhedestien is a route of around 49 kilometres for walking, cycling and horse riding. Baneparken in Sunds was created on former railway land in 1994–95. Troldeskoven was established as a local community project on 26 and 27 October 1990.
Archive, sailing and shelter site
Visitors can view the materials held at Sunds Local History Archive. Check the visiting arrangements in advance. On Sunds Sø, Sunds Sailing Club organises regattas and sailing trips, among other events. Dates vary for individual events; if you want to plan your visit around one, check the relevant dates.
On the outskirts of Sunds, Troldeskoven has a shelter site with two shelters, a composting toilet and a water tap. Check the conditions before your trip. Together with the designated camping opportunities in the municipal plantation, this offers another way to combine your stay with the local paths and natural areas.
