Beder Malling offers several different highlights for a stay: Mariendal Beach, hiking trails of varying lengths, and historical traces in Beder and Malling. By the water, swimming and fishing take centre stage; on the trails, you can choose your route by distance, while the churches and local buildings offer a glimpse into the area’s history.
Mariendal Beach: Swimming and Trails to the North
Mariendal Beach has parking, a dry toilet, fire pits, waste bins, and picnic tables. You can swim, skim stones, and fish; there are also fire pits in the surrounding area. A water point at Mariendalgården, Ørnevænget 37–41, 8330 Beder, is about 500 m away. The beach offers different ways to spend time by the water, from swimming to fishing.
Mariendal Beach is also a good starting point for hikes north towards Fløjstrup and Moesgaard. You can make the beach a destination in its own right or combine it with a hike in this direction. Your choice of route also depends on how much walking you want to include in your stay.
Hiking Trails of Different Lengths
A 2016 hiking map describes four trails starting from Egelund: 3.8 km, 5.8 km, 7 km, and 11.3 km. The red Vilhelmsborg Route is 11.3 km long. It follows the Giber Å through Vilhelmsborg Forest. The white “Beder-Mallingstien” route is 7 km long and leads from Egelund Idrætscenter via Kirkebakken, then back along the Hovedbækken. The stream drains the marsh between Malling and Beder.
The routes differ in more than just length: the Vilhelmsborg Route’s described course takes in the river and forest, while the white Beder-Mallingstien follows Kirkebakken and the Hovedbækken. Beder Church can be seen from this route. It was built in 1150 by the parish’s residents. After Byagerparken, the route reaches Bymosen; in spring, you can hear the rich birdlife and many frogs croaking there.
The Vilhelmsborg Route also passes Rokballe Mill, a mill dating from the 17th century. It was one of several mills along the Giber Å. Vilhelmsborg serves as a National Equestrian Centre—an additional point of interest for travellers interested in equestrian sports.
Churches and Local History
The churches also tell stories of different eras. The cemetery at Malling Church was fortified in the early Middle Ages and was also known as a “folkeborg” (people’s fortress). The church’s baptismal font dates from around the 12th century and is its oldest item of inventory. These details provide tangible points of reference for local history, without requiring a dedicated themed trail.
In Beder, numerous buildings still illustrate the town’s development from a collection of farms into a railway town. Kirkestien is considered part of the original trade and transport route connecting to the loading harbour at Norsminde. In 2021, the local history walking tour routes “Børnenes Lokalhistorie” in Beder-Malling were also available via the free-to-download OpdagAarhus app.
