Art from several periods, a rare surviving industrial monument and the coastal landscape give Nivå its distinctive character. When planning a stay, you can choose by theme and season: the collection and temporary exhibitions, a guided tour of industrial history, the park in bloom, or birdlife, the beach and cycling routes. This makes it easy to decide in advance whether culture, nature or outdoor activities will be the focus of your trip.

Art and industrial history

Nivaagaards Malerisamling displays works of art from the Italian and Northern European Renaissance, the Dutch Baroque and the Danish Golden Age. The collection spans several periods and artistic traditions. Two to three temporary exhibitions are added each year. The art museum also offers activities for children and adults. If you are planning a visit, it is worth checking the exhibition programme for your travel dates; the temporary exhibitions complement the collection with changing themes.

Another way to explore industrial history is to visit the Nivaagaard Brickworks Ring Kiln, a rare surviving industrial monument. The ring kiln was put into operation in 1870. A visit includes a guided tour covering the history of the area and the brickworks, as well as how the ring kiln works. The visit therefore combines local history with an insight into the kiln’s technology; unlike the art museum, the focus here is on a single building.

Blooming season and birdlife

The rhododendrons in the park by Nivaagaards Malerisamling are in full bloom in late May and early June. If you would like to see them at their best, this gives you a clearly defined window for planning your visit. The coastal meadows at Nivå Bugt have a different rhythm: they serve as a resting place for thousands of birds all year round. More than 200 bird species have been observed there over the years. The rhododendrons therefore provide a seasonal highlight, while the birds’ stopover is not limited to late spring.

Coast, harbour and routes

Nivå Strand is a sandy beach with a long bathing jetty extending into the Øresund. The bathing jetty is also accessible to people with disabilities. Nivå Havn was built in a former clay pit belonging to Nivå Teglværk and has 426 berths. The beach and harbour therefore offer different coastal experiences: the bathing jetty and beach on the one hand, and the harbour built in the former clay pit on the other.

For a cycling route with a specified length and destinations, Dronningerunden offers clear details: it is 40 kilometres long and signposted. From Nivå on the Øresund coast, it heads inland to Lake Esrum and Fredensborg Palace. Langstrupstien offers a different experience, leading from Fredensborg through villages and forests to Nivå’s coastal meadows on the Øresund. The two routes therefore differ both in the landscapes described and in that Dronningerunden is explicitly designated as a cycling route.

Getting there and practical information

Nivå station is in North Zealand, specifically in Fredensborg Municipality. It is on the Kystbanen line between København H and Helsingør. Regional trains run on the line and stop in Nivå, among other places. Check the timetable for your travel date to plan your journey.

At Nivaagaards Malerisamling, electric cars can be charged in the car park and e-bikes at the bicycle racks. If you are visiting the art museum, you can take these charging facilities into account when planning your trip.
