If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Povlsker, you can build your trip around three distinct themes: church art, landscape and archaeology. The towerless Povls Church with its wall paintings, the high-lying Povlsker Plantation with its bog-filled depressions, and the archaeological sites of Rispebjerg and Højlyngen offer different points of interest. The marked Højlyngsstien trail also passes through Poulsker Plantation; at 67 kilometres long, it crosses Bornholm.

Getting to Bornholm

Bornholm can be reached by ferry, plane, bus or train. The ferry crossing from Ystad in Sweden to Bornholm takes one hour and 20 minutes. Check current connections and timetables before travelling, as routes and services may change.

Church and Historical Traces

Povls Church is a church without a tower. Inside are wall paintings. The unusually designed front of the altar was also uncovered during the most recent restoration. The towerless silhouette and several details inside the church therefore offer distinct points of interest. For travellers interested in sacred architecture, this combination provides a clear local focus.

The runic inscription DR 368 is also recorded at Sankt Pouls Church in Poulsker. It adds a specific written record to the church-related themes and broadens the historical perspective from architecture and furnishings to runic writing.

Landscape and Hiking

Povlsker Plantation is a high-lying granite area with small, bog-filled depressions. The upper reaches of the Øle Å flow through the plantation. Rock formations, boggy lowlands and the river create varied contours in the landscape before the focus shifts to the hiking trails.

The marked Højlyngsstien trail is 67 kilometres long and crosses Bornholm. In Poulsker Plantation, it follows the Øleå Trail; for the most part, it runs along gravel roads and footpaths. Its total length makes it a long-distance hiking route, while the plantation gives it a local connection. Trail conditions can vary seasonally, so check current conditions before setting out.

Archaeological Sites

Rispebjerg is an archaeological area with traces of a Stone Age sun temple and an Iron Age ring fortress. The ring fortress is Bornholm’s largest Iron Age defensive structure. Naturstyrelsen has acquired ten hectares of the central part of Rispebjerg to protect the unique archaeological structures that remain hidden in the ground. The combination of Stone Age and Iron Age traces gives Rispebjerg a clear historical focus.

A protected area in Højlyngen contains numerous cairns, two bautastones, Kragestenen, Kredsstenen and a stone circle. This provides a different archaeological focus from Rispebjerg: there, the emphasis is on temple traces and the ring fortress; here, it is on a diverse group of stone monuments. The two areas can therefore be considered in terms of different archaeological interests.
