Radešín combines castle history with Czech balloon manufacturing and religious traditions. The castle, the museum in the castle and the chapels offer different cultural highlights; a pilgrimage is celebrated annually. Two distinctions are particularly useful when planning your trip: the castle’s history stretches from its medieval origins to the Baroque period, while the museum shows the development of balloon manufacturing in two historical state contexts. Arrange a visit to the museum in advance by telephone.

Radešín Castle: From Monastic Estate to the Baroque Period

Radešín Castle was founded in the second half of the 13th century as a monastic estate of the Cistercians. It also served as a rural retreat where Cistercian abbots could rest. Between 1706 and 1710, it was remodelled in the Baroque style; this remodelling is attributed to Jan Blažej Santini-Aichl. The castle’s history thus brings together the early estate’s monastic function and a later Baroque building phase. Its foundation and remodelling mark distinct chapters in the castle’s history.

You can reach Radešín Castle by car via the Bohdalec–Radešín road. About 100 m beyond the “Radešín” town sign, turn right. As practical access information can change, check the route before your trip.

Balloon Manufacturing in the Castle

A museum on the history of balloon manufacturing opened at Radešín Castle in 2019. It shows the development and manufacture of hot-air balloons, first in Czechoslovakia and later in the Czech Republic. Its scope therefore covers two historical state contexts. While the castle’s history tells of monastic use and Baroque remodelling, the museum focuses on the history of technology.

The museum has no regular opening hours; arrange visits by telephone on +420 734 44 30 30. Agree on a time in advance and confirm the arrangement before you arrive.

Chapels and Pilgrimage

The chapel in Radešín dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built in 1884 and solemnly consecrated on 15 August 1887. The niche chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the castle park was restored in 2007 using historical photographs and the recollections of eyewitnesses. These details cover both the building and consecration history and the later restoration of a religious structure.

The Radešín pilgrimage is celebrated annually and includes a festive pilgrimage Mass at the Chapel of the Assumption of Mary. If you would like to include the pilgrimage in your travel plans, check the dates for your year of travel. This helps distinguish the recurring religious event from the historical themes around the castle and museum, which can be explored year-round.

Routes and Landscape

On the Santiniho stezka Vysočinou, a lunch at the Balónový hotel in Radešín and a visit to Radešín Castle are followed by the villages of Sklené and Ostrov nad Oslavou. In this route itinerary, Radešín is therefore linked to a meal stop and a castle visit before the two named places.

Another route option is the nature trail around Bobrová: its red circular route is 6 km long, passes through forests and meadows, and runs mostly away from roads. The details differ clearly for trip planning: the Balloon Museum requires an appointment by telephone, while the circular route is described by its length and landscape. This lets you weigh cultural history, religious traditions and a described scenic walk as different interests for your trip.
