Netín brings together two different interests: architectural and art history centred on the church and the Lobkowicz Crypt, and a green-marked hike to the summit. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands in the village; to the north, on Horka Hill, is the monumental Neo-Gothic Lobkowicz family crypt. These two themes offer different focal points when planning a stay.

Church and crypt: two historical landmarks

The church is first mentioned in 1414. The crypt was built from 1869 to 1871 to a design by architect Augustin Prokop, at the request of Princess Leopoldina of Lobkowicz. These dates mark different historical reference points: the first mention of the church and the construction period of the crypt.

Stations of the Cross with 14 stops

The Stations of the Cross leading to the crypt consist of 14 stone chapels. Each station features a folk-style depiction of Christ’s Way of the Cross to Golgotha. The religious sequence of images is thus arranged along the individual stations. A row of mature lime trees lines the path to the crypt and is another defining feature of this stretch.

The crypt chapel’s architecture

The chapel in the Lobkowicz family crypt has an almost square floor plan and a three-aisled interior. The floor plan and the interior describe different aspects: the floor plan indicates the chapel’s shape, while the three aisles describe its interior layout. The small, prismatic apse contains three coloured stained-glass windows depicting figures and the family coat of arms. A triumphal arch connects the apse to the chapel. The spatial layout and the window design can therefore be considered as distinct architectural details.

Access on special occasions

The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, the burial chapel in the crypt, is open on special occasions, such as the Night of Churches. You should therefore not plan an interior visit as an activity that is available at all times. Check in advance what visiting options are available for the particular occasion.

Green-marked hiking trail

The hiking trail starts at the tourist signpost on Netín village square and leads to the summit. The route is 5.2 kilometres long, with a walking time of about an hour and a half. It also involves 246 metres of ascent and 86 metres of descent. The ascent is therefore considerably greater than the descent. The distance, approximate walking time and elevation figures provide different reference points for planning, but do not on their own determine the level of difficulty. Check the local trail markings before setting out, as conditions may change.

For day planning, the information about the hike and the crypt chapel is different: the walking time gives an approximate indication of how long the route takes, while access to the burial chapel is limited to special occasions. The route can therefore be estimated in terms of time, whereas a specific occasion determines whether you can visit the interior.
