Wall chapels, the late-Baroque painted Church of St. Brikcí and a stone two-arch bridge: Stará Dobev offers different architectural forms within a compact area. If you are interested in sacred architecture and historical details, you can compare niches, a statue of a saint, ornamental painting and bridge arches here. Each building has its own distinct features.

Wall chapels and a chapel at a junction

The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk is located in the southern boundary wall. It is accessible from the south, from the road. Another niche chapel dedicated to the same saint is set in the cemetery wall and is listed as a cultural asset of Stará Dobev. Its niche is dated to 1851. Inside stands a smaller-than-life-size statue of the saint on a stone pedestal with a base; a low, decorative wrought-iron grille closes the niche. This chapel allows you to distinguish its position in the wall, the figure, the stone support and the metalwork as separate architectural details.

The niche chapel of the Holy Trinity is also listed as a cultural asset of Stará Dobev. It stands at the junction of the road at the end of the village towards Kestřany and a field track towards Dobevský rybník. To orient yourself, you can remember the two directions separately: Kestřany is along the road, while Dobevský rybník is along the field track. A yellow hiking trail also passes by the chapel. Check its route locally before setting out.

Church of St. Brikcí and former school

The nave of the Church of St. Brikcí in Stará Dobev is now decorated with late-Baroque ornamental painting. This gives it a different architectural focus from the chapels: here, the nave’s painted decoration defines the building, while the position in the wall and the fittings inside the niche are the main features of the niche chapels.

Another specific local landmark is the former school building in Stará Dobev. In 2024, it served as the seat of the Dobev municipal office and housed the municipal library. The date 2024 is important for understanding its use at that time.

The stone bridge in western Stará Dobev

In the western part of Stará Dobev, road bridge No. 139-004 stands on the Písek–Strakonice road. The stone bridge crosses the Brložský potok on two arches. Since 3 May 1958, the bridge and the associated cross have been protected as monuments. Its two-arch design makes the bridge a different architectural landmark from the chapels: here, the stone arches and watercourse define the structure, rather than a wall niche and figure.

Getting around and overnight stays

Road II/139 from Písek to Strakonice runs through the municipality of Dobev; there is a bus connection between the two towns. If you are considering taking it to get there, check the timetable for your travel date. For a walk, the yellow hiking trail by the niche chapel of the Holy Trinity is a specific point of reference; check its route locally.

Another accommodation option in the municipality is the seasonal Stašov campsite, set amid forests by Stašov Pond. It offers overnight stays in your own tents and caravans. The surrounding area is suitable for swimming for children and adults. Since availability may change, check before travelling whether your preferred accommodation is available for your dates.
