In Staňkov U Třeboně, Staňkovský rybník shapes the landscape. The village lies below the high dam: it is 18 metres high and is considered the highest pond dam in Czechia. Water, cycling routes, a protected moor and historical landmarks offer different focal points for a stay.
At Staňkovský rybník: swimming, fishing and cycling
The pond is considered a popular destination for summer recreation, family holidays, fishing and swimming. Rybářství Třeboň operates recreational and sport fishing there; conditions may vary by season. Paddleboards and boats are also available for hire at Staňkovský rybník. Check the providers’ current information before making plans. The pond can be reached from the village by car or bicycle.
Two routes offer different options for navigating by bike: CT1014 runs from Chlum u Třeboně through Staňkov. CT322 runs from the edge of the village towards Smírčí vrch and continues to Dolní pstruhový rybník. There is a place to swim at Staňkovský rybník. Check the signs on site; for CT322, you should also take current route conditions into account.
The protected Rašeliniště Pele peat bog
Rašeliniště Pele is a protected peat bog at an early stage of development. The area lies partly within the cadastral area of Staňkov and is considered unusual in the peat-rich Třeboň Basin. Public access is via a forest path from the settlement of Pele. When visiting, follow the nature reserve’s protection rules.
The bog’s distinctive features include floating carpets of sphagnum moss, round-leaved sundew and a large population of lesser bladderwort. The area also provides a habitat for the noble crayfish and the dragonfly species Leucorrhinia rubicunda. This makes its nature-focused appeal quite different from the recreational offerings at the pond: here, the focus is on a protected bog habitat and its plants and animals.
Crafts, small monuments and a festival
Historical crafts in Staňkov included pottery, brickmaking and the production of wooden shingles. The burning of wood tar in several kilns was particularly widespread. The history of Staňkovský rybník also goes back a long way: it may have been created between 1551 and 1559 by Mikuláš Ruthart on the former border stream Hostice.
Along the road from Staňkov to Chlum u Třeboně are small Baroque wayside shrines known as Boží muka. They belong to the type with Tuscan columns. The year 1820, probably carved in at a later date, appears on the base. This cautious dating is important: the year is thought to have been added later, rather than being a definite indication of when the structure was built.
The Na břehu festival also offers a specific date to plan around. Since its first edition in 2021, it has been held regularly every year on the last weekend in July. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the dates for your travel year.
When looking for a holiday apartment, you could first consider which side of Staňkov you want to shape your stay: Staňkovský rybník for swimming, fishing and rentals, the cycling routes, the protected area or the local history. Then compare the location of a specific accommodation with your own plans for each day.
