The Okolo Třeboně cycling trail runs through the village square of Nová Hlína. The Rožmberk pond is very close by, and cycling routes lead to Stará Hlína. There, the historic stone flood bridges are prominent landmarks. This provides concrete waypoints for planning: the village square, the pond embankment and the bridges.

Cycling routes between the village square, Třeboň and Stará Hlína

A cycling path opened in spring 2017 connects Třeboň with Nová Hlína and Stará Hlína. In Třeboň, the path starts at Na Kopečku and leads safely to Stará Hlína. The Okolo Třeboně cycling trail also runs through the village square of Nová Hlína. This information helps distinguish the route through the village from a starting point in Třeboň: the village square is a waypoint on the trail, while Na Kopečku is the starting point in Třeboň.

From Nová Hlína, cyclists can reach Stará Hlína by either of two described routes: via the village square and past Vítek pond, or via a historic stone flood bridge. Another regional route, “K rybníkům a pískovnám na Třeboňsku,” follows the crest of the Vítek pond embankment to Nová Hlína. The destinations differ: the two routes lead to Stará Hlína, while the regional route follows the crest of the Vítek pond embankment to Nová Hlína.

Temporary work may change access. Check the current route before setting out.

The flood bridges: their construction history and present-day use

The two historic stone flood bridges near Stará Hlína were built by the Schwarzenbergs in 1781 and 1799. Since 1958, both have been listed as technical monuments in the Czech Republic. Their history gives the bridges a distinct place alongside the cycling routes: they are technical monuments dating from two different years, not a single structure built in one period.

One of the bridges has five arches. After the floods of 2002, it was repaired and reopened to the public in 2004. Today, the historic flood bridges are used exclusively by pedestrians and cyclists, and no longer by regular road traffic. For trip planning, this means the bridges are described as pedestrian and cycling connections, not as crossings for ordinary road traffic.

Rožmberk and the landscape around the pond

Rožmberk pond, the largest pond in the Czech Republic, is located right beside Nová Hlína. Its embankment is 2,430 metres long, and oak trees 150 to 400 years old grow along it. This adds a connection to a large pond and its long embankment to a visit that also includes village and bridge routes. Rožmberk should be distinguished from Vítek pond: Vítek lies on a described route to Nová Hlína, while the embankment with its old oaks belongs to Rožmberk.
