Subschitz offers two distinct ways to plan a trip: the circular village layout of Zubčice, still visible today, and hiking and cycling trails with views of named places and heights. There are also buildings with their own history. The elevation and the highest point in the municipality provide a specific context for the landscape.
Village Layout and Elevation
Zubčice lies at the foot of the Poluška hills, also locally called Kuklíky, at an elevation of about 620 metres above sea level. Mount Horní Háj is on the northeastern slope of Zubčice. At 739 metres, it is the highest point in the municipality. These two figures distinguish the village at the foot of the hills from the municipality’s highest point.
The layout of a village founded around a circular village green is still visible in Zubčice today. A wooden bell tower stands on the village green. The green is therefore not just an open space, but also a reference point for the settlement pattern that remains visible. Those interested in the development of small village layouts will find a specific counterpart here to the surrounding ridges and viewpoints.
Chapel, Village Green and Local History
The Chapel of the Virgin Mary stands in Markvartice. It was built in 1873 and restored. Its historicist style combines Baroque and Neoclassical elements. Markvartice’s grassy village green is surrounded by lime trees and large farmsteads, which point to the green’s original circular layout. By contrast, in Zubčice, the wooden bell tower on the village green is particularly well documented.
The first written record of Zubčice dates from 1358 and is associated with the Lords of Pořešín. House No. 12 in Zubčice is also listed as a cultural monument. These historical references range from the earliest written record and the settlement pattern to individual buildings.
Pflégrův mlýn is a large farmstead on the Zubčický potok. The mill was built in 1867 by the miller Jan Pfleger (1816–1889). It is not open to visitors, so it should be regarded as a historical landmark, not a sightseeing destination.
Hiking and Cycling Trails
Cycle Route 1199 Práčov–Velešín runs through Zubčice. At the municipal level, another route connection is available: in Práčov, this cycle route connects with the Vltava Cycle Route from Šumava to Mělník, which is part of the international EuroVelo 7 route. Check the signage and trail conditions before setting out.
Hiking and cycling trails around Zubčice offer views of the village on the opposite mountain, Svatý Ján nad Malší. Other sights include Včelíny, Kleť, and the horizon of Blanský les. The views thus range from a specific village panorama to a broader horizon.
Plan Some Recreational Sport
Above the village, the tennis courts of TJ Zubčice form a fenced facility with changing rooms and a technical building, primarily intended for recreational sport. If you would like to include the facility in your stay, check the current arrangements for use before visiting. Alongside local history and trails, the municipality also offers tennis courts as a specific recreational option.
When planning your trip, you can focus on these themes separately: the circular village layout and buildings lead into local history, while the hiking and cycling trails open up different viewpoints. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests without combining the various places and trails into a single itinerary.
