Pořešín brings together medieval history and several clearly distinct route connections. The castle tells of a former administrative function; the castle museum focuses on clothing, weapons and finds. The routes vary in scale: a 215-kilometre historic connection, a blue-marked route from Kaplice and a route that passes through Pořešín. This lets you focus on the castle and museum or on the town’s place within wider connections.
The Castle and Its Historic Role
Pořešín Castle was founded at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries by members of the Bavorů ze Strakonic family. It served as an administrative centre for the family’s more distant estates. The historical perspective therefore extends beyond the castle itself to the administration of the family’s estates. The ruins stand on a narrow, wooded rocky promontory above the left bank of the Malše. The river setting and the castle’s former administrative function offer two distinct perspectives on the same place: its landscape and its history.
Finds in the Castle Museum
The Pořešín Castle Museum presents information about medieval clothing and weapons. It also displays authentic objects found at the castle, including coins, a bone bead, part of a suit of armour, a knife, spurs, a barrel and the oldest surviving wooden beam. The examples range from small finds to objects of a very different size. Clothing and weapons open up topics of their own, while the finds provide a tangible connection to the castle. Visitors interested in material evidence can therefore explore the past here in a different way than through the history of the site alone.
Outer Bailey and Activities
Pořešín’s outer bailey has been open to the public since 2021. Check the current opening arrangements before your visit. The outer bailey has facilities for various activities related to life in the Middle Ages; individual activities may vary. The outer bailey grounds are used for events such as battle reenactments and medieval craft markets. If you are planning your visit around a particular event, check its dates in advance. The castle grounds also include a concert stage.
Routes on Different Scales
The Zemská stezka leads to Pořešín Castle and connects South Bohemia with the Danube region. As a historic highway between Bohemia and Upper Austria, it is 215 kilometres long. Its geographical scope therefore extends far beyond a visit to a single castle; Pořešín is one specific point along this connection. The blue-marked route from Kaplice to Pořešín offers a different perspective: it starts in Kaplice town park and follows the left bank of the Malše. Here, the starting point, trail marking and riverbank provide clear navigational references. The Hrady na Malši route also passes through Pořešín. Check the route markings and current trail conditions before setting out.
