Staré Dobrkovice reveals itself through different layers of time: the archaeological site is dated to the Mousterian and the High Middle Ages; Baroque religious buildings and a multi-layered mill complex add to its cultural character. There is also a cycling route with specific information about its length, surface and approximate duration.
Archaeological traces and cave
The Staré Dobrkovice archaeological site is classified as a significant archaeological locality in category ÚAN I. Its dating spans the Mousterian and the High Middle Ages. This range stretches from a prehistoric period to the Middle Ages, giving the site a distinct perspective alongside the later buildings. This contrast is what makes the area's history so varied: the dating of the site and the architecture of the chapel or mill tell different stories.
Dobrkovická Cave lies south of Staré Dobrkovice, directly beside the road from Český Krumlov to Kájov. It was probably inhabited for a time by a group of Upper Palaeolithic hunters of the species Homo sapiens sapiens. A few bone and flint tools, as well as the remains of prehistoric animals, were found in the cave. Here, a specific archaeological finding meets a cautious interpretation of earlier use; the cave's temporary settlement remains a supposition.
Another local perspective is the tradition of visiting Dobrkovice Bridge: children from several generations went to see the stalactite formations beneath the bridge. This handed-down memory adds a different emphasis from the archaeological finds and is part of the local history of the cave.
Religious buildings and mills
The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk is part of a unique ensemble of numerous small Baroque religious buildings. The buildings are scattered over a wide area beneath Mount Kleť; the ensemble is connected with pilgrimage processions to the well-known pilgrimage site of Kájov. The chapel can therefore be viewed in the context of a broader pilgrimage tradition, not just as a standalone building. For those interested in cultural history, its special appeal lies in the combination of numerous small buildings, their wide distribution and their connection with pilgrimage.
The Dobrkovická Mill, also called Hamerský mlýn, stands on the Polečnice. This protected architectural monument is a Gothic-Renaissance-Baroque building complex. Its architectural layers offer a different way into the area's history than the widely scattered religious buildings: here, the focus is on a complex by the river. Another bridge over the Polečnice is also part of Staré Dobrkovice and adds to the area's historical landmarks.
Landscape and cycling
Part of Staré Dobrkovice's linear settlement along the stream extends into the Blanský les Protected Landscape Area. The stream is thus a reference point both for the settlement pattern and for the area's relationship with the protected landscape. This partial overlap between the built-up area and the protected landscape is also part of the local scenery.
Along the Staré Dobrkovice section of the cycling route, Dobrkovická Cave lies beneath a vertical rock face with an overhang. The cave therefore has a clear connection with the landscape as well as archaeological significance: the rock face defines its immediate setting, while the tools and animal remains direct attention to prehistory.
The short Malý Lazecko-Vyšenský Circuit offers a specific cycling option: it is 14 km long, paved and designed as a circular route; the ride takes approximately two hours. The route is also suitable for children and less experienced cyclists. This approximate duration helps you plan the circuit as a standalone activity. Check conditions before setting out and take your own riding style into account.
This gives you a clear distinction between the main travel themes: the archaeological site, cave, chapel and mill represent archaeological and architectural interests, while the circuit is a sporting activity with a defined duration. If you are looking for accommodation in Staré Dobrkovice, you can first decide whether the cultural heritage or cycling should be the main focus of your trip.
