Doubrava lies on the right bank of the Vltava in a small valley. A small watercourse there frequently caused local flooding. The two references to water describe different aspects of the local landscape: the Vltava defines the riverside location, while the smaller watercourse is associated with frequent local flooding. Doubrava can therefore be understood both as a place by the river and as a village in a valley with its own history of flooding.

Archaeological traces

In the cadastral area of Doubrava nad Vltavou, archaeological site SAS 33590 includes a currently protected burial mound site. At Doubrava-Kamenný vrch, only one burial mound remains from an unknown number. The protected status and state of preservation offer different perspectives: one classifies a site, while the other records the specific finding of a surviving mound. Both the protected site and the individual burial mound play a role in the archaeological understanding of the village.

Architectural heritage in the village

Two timber granaries at house No. 23 in Doubrava nad Vltavou are designated immovable cultural monuments. The house number pinpoints this architectural heritage. In the centre of Doubrava, a village chapel stands in front of the “U Houšků” inn. The same family has owned and operated the inn since 1 October 1931. Different points of reference thus come together in the village: two granaries at a specified house number, a chapel in the centre and the history of an inn with a precise family connection. These are distinct landmarks for finding your way around the village: for the chapel, the central location and its connection to the inn are helpful; for the granaries, it is the specific house number.

River landmarks in the surrounding area

Among the river landmarks in the immediate area is a bridge that was never completed. The planned bridge was intended to connect Doubrava on the right bank with Albrechtická Hladná on the left bank, but it was never completed. The stump of a bridge pier is accessible from the left bank at Albrechtická Hladná. Another point of interest is a concrete ŘOP fortification: when the water level is low, its roof can be seen from the opposite riverbank. The two traces by the river differ in practical terms: the pier is an accessible remnant of an unfinished project, while seeing the fortification’s roof depends on the water level.

Two different dates

The dates also tell different stories. Doubrava was first mentioned in writing in 1295 under the name “Dubraua”; 1 October 1931 marks the beginning of the same family’s ownership and operation of the inn. The first date relates to the written mention of the village, the second to the family history of a particular building. Thus, the village’s early mention and the precisely dated history of the inn relate to different historical contexts. When placing Doubrava in a historical timeline, these dates should not be read as equivalent: the first mention is not the village’s founding year.
