Jakubovice combines the character of a mountain village with a tangible architectural history. Its steeply sloping location provides the landscape setting; the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the protected Cottage No. 66 represent different architectural forms. The early mention of a church also brings the long history of the village into focus.

A mountain village in the Ĺ tĂtecko region

Jakubovice is a typical mountain village in the Štítecko region, which is part of the Branenská vrchovina highlands. The village lies on a steep hillside. The elevations of the buildings range from about 355 metres at the lowest house to 600 metres at the highest farmstead. These figures make the stepped elevation of the settlement clear: the village follows a pronounced rise in the terrain rather than a flat area. This hillside setting thus shapes both the landscape and the spatial orientation within the village.

The church and the history of the village

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is an early Baroque parish church dating from 1697. A church in Jakubovice is documented by 1350 at the latest; the two dates mark different historical points of reference: 1350 represents the early record of a church in the village, while 1697 is the date of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The church complex was added to the Czech list of cultural monuments in May 1958. Jakubovice is also listed in the 1995 decree of the Czech Ministry of Culture designating village conservation areas. Together, these milestones trace the path from the village’s early church history to later heritage designations.

Access arrangements are important for visitors: the church complex and church building are usually closed; public access is generally available only on special occasions or for the Sunday early Mass at 7:30 a.m. The access information was last updated on 22 April 2019. Therefore, check before your visit whether access will be possible at your planned time.

Protected Cottage No. 66

Protected Cottage No. 66 offers another perspective on Jakubovice. It stands on a road in the western part of the village and is a single-storey building with its gable end facing the street. Its roof is a gabled roof with a clipped gable end. “Gable-facing” describes an orientation in which the gable end forms the front of the building. A clipped-gable roof combines two main sloping surfaces with a slanted section of roof at the gable end. In contrast to the church, the cottage can be considered in terms of its orientation, number of storeys, and roof structure; for the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the focus is instead on its early Baroque classification and the year it was built, 1697.

Routes and getting there

A junction of tourist routes is located beside the church. For those interested in architectural history and finding their way through the trail network, this provides a specific point of reference: local history and route orientation meet here. Jakubovice is also connected with Štíty, Olšany, Šumperk, Zábřeh, and other neighbouring municipalities. Check current routes and timetables for your journey.
