Discover Velká Kraš through its river, lowland and cultural heritage: the Vidnávka shapes the municipality and its associated settlements as a landscape feature. At the same time, the municipal area includes a fertile part of the Vidnavská nížina near the Polish state border; the Žulovská pahorkatina forms its southern edge. Here, specific landscape features meet churches, chapels and named routes.

Landscape and orientation

Two elevation figures add to the picture. Mount Smolný reaches 440 metres above sea level in Velká Kraš. At 221 metres, the lowest point in the Jeseník District lies within the Velká Kraš area; this is where the Vidnávka leaves the area. Together, the river, the low exit point and the named elevation offer different geographical reference points for finding your way around the municipality.

Churches, chapels and local history

Since the 19th century, Velká Kraš has been a centre for stone quarrying and processing. Among its notable buildings is the Kostel sv. Floriána, a neoclassical church completed in 1799. The Panny Marie Chapel is a listed, detached small neoclassical chapel. It is probably dated to the late 19th century.

A chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built in Hukovice in 1770. After 1804, the municipality had it converted into a neoclassical church. The buildings thus offer different chronological reference points: completion in 1799, a conversion after 1804, and the probable dating of the small chapel to the late 19th century. In this last case, the date is explicitly given as probable.

Routes through Velká Kraš

For cyclists, the cycling variant of the Stezka Slezskem leads from Vidnava back to the Velká Kraš route junction and then continues on marked cycle paths. The Via Czechia Stezka Slezskem route passes through Velká Kraš and Hukovice to a railway station. There is a shelter at the Velká Kraš route junction, and a campsite is 200 metres to the south. These points help you understand the route and its landmarks.

The Trail podél Černého potoka runs alongside the Černý potok to the car parks by the outdoor swimming pool in Velká Kraš near Vidnava. The route is 28.89 kilometres long and rated easy. As route conditions can change seasonally, check the route before setting out. The information differs from that for the cycling variant of the Stezka Slezskem: the trail’s length and difficulty level are specified, while the Stezka Slezskem information describes the continuation on marked cycle paths and the route through Hukovice to a railway station.

The historic buildings offer dated points of interest for a cultural and historical stay; the routes provide specific information for planning a section of your journey. Plan according to the route in question and the subject that interests you most in Velká Kraš.
