Prachen combines striking basalt formations, hiking trails and a local history shaped by glassmaking. The routes vary in length and destination: they lead, among other places, to the Church of St. Lawrence or Česká skála. There are also timber-framed houses, a creative glass studio and a seasonal railway museum train. If you’re planning your days, you can choose between nature, local history and glass design as different points of focus.
Basalt and distinctive landscapes
Panská skála consists of slender, four- to six-sided basalt columns, some reaching up to 15 m in height. At 597 m, it is a basalt hill and a national natural monument near Prácheň, close to Kamenický Šenov, in Zone II of the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area. The figure of up to 15 m refers to the columns; 597 m is the elevation of the basalt hill. The two figures therefore describe different dimensions of Panská skála.
Below Panská skála, a small pond lies in a former quarry; it is fed by rainwater. Vyhlídka is a basalt hill on the edge of Prácheň. Česká skála is another basalt formation in the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area. From the Česká skála route, the view extends as far as Nový Bor and Česká Lípa. The hikes therefore offer a choice of distinct landscape impressions: column formations, a hill and distant views.
Hiking trails with different destinations
The 3 km trail to the Prácheň viewpoint starts and ends at the car park by Panská skála and passes through Prácheň to the Church of St. Lawrence. The 10 km circular trail, In the Footsteps of the Railway, also starts and ends at the car park by Panská skála and leads back to Prácheň. The 3.5 km hiking route to Česká skála runs along the edge of Prácheň and reaches the rock formation.
The two shorter options are close in length at 3 and 3.5 km, but have different destinations: the 3 km trail leads to the Prácheň viewpoint and through the village to the church, while the 3.5 km route leads to Česká skála. The 10 km loop is the longest option, and its name already indicates its railway theme. You can choose by distance and destination rather than treating the routes as similar hikes.
Local history and glass design
Prácheň was once a glassmaking village and is now part of Kamenický Šenov, with its timber-framed houses. The Church of St. Lawrence dates from the 18th century. Construction began in 1771; the bell tower was completed in 1853. The start of construction and the completion of the bell tower are two distinct historical milestones.
Bystro Design is a creative studio founded in 2005 that focuses on artistic glass and product design. A visit offers an insight into modern glassmaking. Visitors can try glass grinding and design their own piece of jewellery. Making a relief from fused glass requires prior arrangement. This hands-on experience with glass complements the historical themes.
Seasonal planning
From spring to autumn, you can take a museum train on the private railway from Kamenický Šenov to Česká Kamenice and back. Since the service is seasonal, check the timetable for your travel dates. Prior arrangement is required for glass activities at Bystro Design.
