In Bergstadt Platten, also known as Horní Blatná, the town’s history is firmly rooted in tin ore: it was founded as a Renaissance mining town, and its origins are linked to deposits in the surrounding area. There are also traces that raise different questions: how mining and industry used water, how sacred architecture changed, and what traces were left by old tunnels. This way, you can plan your trip around a specific interest rather than simply listing sights.

Tin Mining and the Town’s History

Horní Blatná was founded as a Renaissance mining town in 1534; its origins were linked to tin ore deposits in the surrounding area. In 1992, its historic town center was declared an urban conservation zone. These two dates place the town’s mining connection and the later protection of its center in historical context.

The town museum is located at No. 127 in Horní Blatná. Its permanent exhibition covers the history of the town and the mining and processing of ores in the surrounding area. Visitors interested in the town’s development will find both the urban and mining perspectives here.

The Blatenský příkop is a 12-kilometer-long artificial canal. It was used for ore mining and as an energy source for industry in Horní Blatná. The museum focuses on history, mining and processing; the canal illustrates another aspect of industrial history: the use of water.

Natural Monument and Viewpoint

Vlčí jáma is a protected natural monument with remnants of old collapsed tunnels and chambers. Ledová jáma, which is part of Vlčí jáma, is 15 meters deep and retains snow all year round; seasonal conditions may vary. This natural monument therefore brings together a geological feature and traces of mining, though the two tell different stories.

Zitina vyhlídka stands on Blatenský vrch at 1,044 meters above sea level. The lookout point is 21 meters high and offers views of the surrounding natural landscape. The two height figures refer to different things: 1,044 meters describes the mountain’s elevation, while 21 meters is the height of the lookout point.

In 1912, the Horní Blatná winter sports club built Zitina vyhlídka together with a restaurant and a tourist lodge. This construction history adds a chapter on local tourism to the story of the landscape. The references to the restaurant and lodge describe their joint construction, not their current availability.

St. Lawrence Church: Change and Craftsmanship

St. Lawrence Church in Horní Blatná was built in 1594 as a Protestant church in the Saxon Renaissance style. It underwent extensive Late Baroque renovations in 1754–1755. The church thus reveals two distinct periods in its architectural history: the original Renaissance building and its later transformation.

Its furnishings include a Renaissance tin baptismal font, cast in 1544 by Leonhard Dürr, a pewterer from Jáchymov. Its material, date and named caster make the font a specific example of tin casting and craftsmanship. Its date predates the construction of the church, making it a separate historical reference point.

St. Lawrence Church occasionally opens its doors to anyone seeking peace, beauty or a moment for reflection. Check current opening arrangements before your visit; no regular schedule is specified.
