Údrc brings together several periods of architectural history and the Za Údrčí Natural Monument. The Church of St Linhart, the history of the château and the remains of an older water castle offer different ways to explore the history of the village. The Natural Monument, by contrast, focuses on protected habitats and species. There is one practical distinction to keep in mind when planning your visit: the church is open only occasionally. A nature trail through the Natural Monument also explores the history of mining, which offers another perspective beyond its nature themes.
Church of St Linhart
The Church of St Linhart in Údrč was probably built in the mid-14th century. It was remodelled in the Baroque style in the 1730s. Its history therefore reaches back to the Middle Ages, while the Baroque remodelling marks a later phase. If you are interested in architectural history, you will find not just one date here, but two distinct periods: the presumed date of construction and the later changes to the building.
Access to the church is via a seven-step staircase with a lockable gate. A second gate on the northeast side of the grounds also provides access. However, the church is open only occasionally; access may depend on events or local arrangements. If visiting the interior is important to your plans, check in advance for a suitable opportunity. This will help you better understand the site's architectural history without assuming that access is available at all times.
Château and remains of the water castle
Údrč Château developed from a Renaissance fortress originally built around the mid-16th century. In the 17th century, the Lauenburkové family converted the fortress into a Baroque château. This sequence runs from the Renaissance fortress to the later Baroque residence, and is clearly distinct in date from the church's earlier architectural history.
Another historical trace is the Gothic water castle of Údrč, built no later than the first half of the 14th century. The remains include a circular castle rampart, visible sections of foundation masonry and a partly water-filled moat. The castle site was entered on the state register of protected cultural monuments on 3 May 1958. Údrč therefore brings together evidence from different periods: the Gothic water castle and the much later Renaissance fortress from which the château developed.
Za Údrčí Natural Monument
The Za Údrčí Natural Monument lies in the Údrč cadastral area. It protects the marsh fritillary (Euphydryas aurinia) and its habitats in seasonally wet Molinion purple moor-grass meadows. The butterfly has a significant population there. The natural area also includes relatively well-preserved communities of non-wooded formations and a nutrient-rich pond ecosystem with high species diversity. Green frogs are common, and the presence of fire-bellied toads (Bombina bombina) has also been recorded. The protected features therefore include a specifically named butterfly and its habitat, as well as other species and the pond ecosystem.
A nature trail runs through the Natural Monument and explores the mining carried out there in past centuries. This links the area's natural features with its historical use. It may be particularly interesting when choosing what to see on your trip if, alongside historic buildings, you are also interested in habitats, species protection and the area's former mining history. Information about the trail offers a distinct thematic perspective without combining the area's natural and architectural history into a single visiting experience.
Getting to Údrc
Údrc is about one kilometre from the I/6 main road between Prague and Karlovy Vary. Regular buses run from there via Bochov to Žlutice; the stop is at the turn-off to Údrc. Both road and bus connections are therefore relevant when planning your journey. Check the road and local public transport information again locally before setting off. This will help you plan using the connection that suits you, rather than assuming the same arrangements apply to both road and bus travel.
