Sojovice’s character ranges from a reinforced-concrete bridge opened in 1909 to floodplain habitats along the Jizera. Other features include a war memorial, an old bell, a cycling route through the village and fishing waters with specific rules. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these themes separate: nature, local history and activities each have different points of reference and conditions.

The bridge and local history

When it opened, the Sojovice Bridge was one of the largest reinforced-concrete bridges in the Kingdom of Bohemia. It is 64 metres long; including the wing walls, its total length is 78 metres. The figures refer to different measurements: the second includes the wing walls. This helps put the bridge’s size into perspective without treating the two figures as contradictory lengths.

A detail from the opening ceremony is also part of the bridge’s history: a metal capsule containing a commemorative inscription is embedded in the structure. The inscription bears the signatures of those who attended, including Archduke Charles. This means the structure can be viewed not only in terms of its opening date, 5 December 1909, but also through a specific event and its participants.

Other historical references can be found around the village in different memorials. The bell in Sojovice’s bell tower dates from 1533 and is still in use. The war memorial in the village square was unveiled on 28 September 1924 and stands at the centre of the square’s park landscaping. The names of nine residents who fell in the First World War are engraved on the memorial. The bell and the memorial thus represent different forms of remembrance and historical periods far apart in time.

The Jizera and the Černý Orel protected area

The Jizera flows through the cadastral area of Sojovice. The Černý Orel protected area also extends into this area. It protects Jizera floodplain habitats, including deciduous forests, floodplain meadows and grassland. These three habitat types make the area’s natural character more specific than the river’s name alone. The protected area is also home to the dusky large blue butterfly.

Another chapter in the river landscape is the former riverbed, created during construction of the bridge. It is still visible and is known by local residents as Stará Jizera. Sojovice therefore brings together different aspects: protected floodplain habitats on the one hand and a visible landscape feature linked to the bridge’s construction on the other. Visitors especially interested in nature can keep these distinctions in mind alongside the history of the structure.

Cycling route, fishing and getting there

Cycling route 0041 Káraný–Kochánky passes through Sojovice. If you plan to include it in your itinerary, check the route conditions before setting out.

A two-hectare body of water in Sojovice is part of fishing area 411 174 JIZERA 1 A. Fishing at the Sojovice water is permitted on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The rule specifies particular days of the week. Before fishing, check the current rules and access conditions again so you can plan your activity accordingly.

The Sojovice stop on regional bus line 315 was established on 14 December 2025. Check current departure times before including a bus connection in your travel plans. This keeps the confirmed establishment of the stop separate from the question of whether a connection is currently available.
