Suchdol brings together several clearly distinct chapters of local history: the Renaissance remodeling of the château, the early Gothic core of the Church of St. Markéta, and a war memorial with separate dedications to the two world wars. The town lies 8.5 kilometers southwest of Kolín at an altitude of 365 meters. Those considering a stay with a focus on cultural history can weigh up architectural history, religious history and remembrance as concrete themes for their trip.

Château, Church and the History of the Bell

The Renaissance remodeling of the château is considered the first known expression of Renaissance style in the wider area around Kolín. For a trip focused on Renaissance architecture, this offers a clear point of interest: it is a single château and, at the same time, its place in the regional context. Suchdol Château is at house number 1, in the middle of the market square.

The construction history of the Church of St. Markéta dates back to the second half of the 13th century: its core is early Gothic. A bell cast by the Kutná Hora bell founder Jakub Ptáček hangs in the tower. Its original casting is dated to either 1512 or 1522; in 1883, Brno bell founder Weber recast it. The church’s history therefore brings together different periods: the medieval core of the building and the history of the bell, with two possible years for its original casting and a later recasting. The craft connections also differ: Kutná Hora is associated with Jakub Ptáček, while Brno is associated with Weber’s later recasting. The original casting year remains uncertain, whereas the later recasting is precisely dated to 1883.

Remembrance and Historic Buildings

The war memorial is freely accessible. A taller pillar bearing the Czechoslovak coat of arms separates its two sections: the left is dedicated to the victims of the First World War, and the right to those of the Second World War. The division clearly assigns the two dedications to their respective wartime periods.

The former Baroque rectory was built between 1751 and 1753, after the parish was re-established. It burned down on April 6, 1796, and was not restored until 1804. Since 2005, the parish has been part of the Kolín Vicariate; the former rectory passed into municipal ownership and is used as a residence. The Baroque manor house at No. 2 offers a different architectural feature: it is a single-storey building with a square floor plan, dating from the second half of the 18th century. The rectory’s history centers on the fire, restoration and later use, while the manor house is notable for its floor plan and number of storeys.
