Get to know Křečovice through its cultural landmarks: Josef Suk, the Church of St. Luke and an avenue whose stones bear the names of his works. The Josef Suk Memorial is housed in the building where Suk spent a significant part of his life. His birth room is in the Josef Suk Primary School and Kindergarten; special access arrangements apply to visits. The area also has film history and a circular cycling route that passes through Křečovice. During your stay, you can choose between music and local history, architecture and a cycling activity.
Church of St. Luke and Suk’s Avenue
The Church of St. Luke has a single nave and an irregular floor plan. Its massive north tower is asymmetrically positioned. The church also has a Renaissance high altar with a canvas painting dating from 1840. Beside a side entrance, a sculpture described as a “pagan god” is embedded in the exterior plasterwork. The building thus brings together an unusual floor plan and tower arrangement, along with specific details of its furnishings and exterior decoration.
At the northeastern edge of Křečovice, Suk’s Avenue runs parallel to the road to Strážovice. Stones set into the ground bear the engraved names of works by Josef Suk. The connection to his music is made not only through the avenue’s name: the stones refer to individual works. Along with the house where he lived and his birth room, the avenue provides another link to Suk.
Josef Suk and Film History
Film enthusiasts will also find a specific connection to the area: “Vesničko má, středisková” was filmed in Křečovice in 1984 and 1985. Filming also took place in the surrounding area. Křečovice is therefore one of the film’s locations, not the only setting used in the entire production.
Plan a Visit to the Birth Room
Josef Suk’s birth room is in the Josef Suk Primary School and Kindergarten. It is accessible only via the cemetery, and visits must be arranged with the Křečovice municipal office. A recurring opening date is the last Sunday in May, when a memorial concert for Josef Suk takes place in the Church of St. Luke. Confirm the date and arrangements with the municipal office in advance, as access procedures may change.
Cycling Loop and Route to Křečovický Potok
For cyclists, the circular route to the Drahoušek observation tower, between Vlkonice and Osečany, passes through Křečovice. Signposting and route conditions may change; check them before setting off. Another option for those interested in the landscape is to reach the protected area of Křečovický potok by following the red-marked trail from Křečovice to Osečany. Check the trail markings on site. The cycling loop, with the observation tower as its named destination, and the marked trail to the protected area offer different ways to include Křečovice in an active itinerary.
