Český Šternberk offers different ways to shape a stay: the castle with its guided tour and viewpoint, two cycling routes with different planning considerations, and a climbing area. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether castle culture, cycling or climbing will define your stay. Details about the tour, routes and climbing access help bring these interests into focus.
Castle visit: tour, bastion and history
Český Šternberk Castle was founded around 1241 by Zdeslav of Divišov and remains in the founding family’s ownership to this day. The guided tour covers 15 richly furnished rooms on the second floor. Its founding date and continued family ownership provide a historical context, while the tour focuses on the rooms on the second floor.
The castle’s southern outer bastion, Hladomorna, now serves as a viewpoint. It offers a different perspective on the castle from the tour of its interiors: here, the bastion as a viewpoint takes centre stage. The castle also houses a unique collection of 545 prints from the Thirty Years’ War. The historical perspective thus ranges from the castle’s founding around 1241 to a collection from a later period.
Cycling: two routes, different ways to plan
Cycling Route 3/C, approximately 30 km long, passes through Český Šternberk. The Posázavská Cycling Route No. 19 also passes through the town; it runs mostly along easy paths as well as Class II and Class III roads. The two routes can be considered using different criteria: for 3/C, the approximate distance is a planning factor, while for Route No. 19, it is the type of path and road. You can therefore weigh which of these details matters more when choosing a cycling route.
Climbing: wall features and access
The Český Šternberk climbing area is on the right bank of the Sázava, south of the municipality of Malovidy. It is a relatively young area with new routes protected by expansion bolts or rivets. As the protection may change through maintenance, it is advisable to check current conditions before climbing.
Stříbrná stěna is the highest wall in the climbing area visible from the railway station. It offers attractive, long climbing lines; however, the lower sections are quite crumbly. Both features should be considered when assessing the wall: the long lines are one factor, but you should also take the crumbly condition of the lower sections into account.
The easiest way to reach the climbing area is on foot from Český Šternberk railway station, following the tracks downstream towards Rataje nad Sázavou. Check the conditions at the railway-side access point on site. For a castle visit, note that the Český Šternberk stop is about a ten-minute walk from the castle courtyard.
Choose accommodation based on your travel interests
When looking for a hotel in Český Šternberk, your own interests are a useful starting point. For culture, the guided castle tour, bastion and collection take centre stage; for cycling, you can compare the routes by distance and type of path; for climbing, include the features of Stříbrná stěna and access from the railway station in your plans.
