Meneou is a small coastal community known for its idyllic beach. The village is also home to an old stone water management system dating from 1904, which once served the needs of the community. Larnaca Salt Lake lies nearby. The coast and local history therefore shape Meneou itself, while the lake forms a distinct natural area in the surrounding region.

Water history in Meneou

Locally, the system is known as “havouza” (water reservoir) and “lagoumia” (underground water tunnel). These terms describe two distinct water management functions: a reservoir holds water, while a tunnel carries it underground. Its former purpose was linked to the needs of the community. In the past, the system served the community’s water management needs in Meneou.

Larnaca Salt Lake and its birdlife

Larnaca Salt Lake, known locally as “Alyki,” lies east of the villages of Meneou and Dromolaxia and southwest of the city of Larnaca. It is one of four lakes in Larnaca. Covering an area of 2.2 km², it is Cyprus’s second-largest salt lake. In 1997, it was designated a protected area under Cypriot law for the protection and management of nature and wildlife, and under the EU Habitats Directive.

In winter, the lake fills with water and provides a habitat for migratory birds. Thousands of flamingos stay there between November and March; the birdlife also includes wild ducks and other waterbirds and waders. If you would like to take the lake’s birdlife into account, the November-to-March period is relevant when planning your trip.

Cycling route and nature trail

An 18 km cycling route runs from Larnaka Tourist Beach to the village of Meneou. Check the current route conditions before setting out. A designated 4 km nature trail also runs through the Larnaca Salt Lake area to the old Kamares Aqueduct. The two routes differ in length and destination: the cycling route leads to Meneou, while the shorter nature trail runs through the lake area to the aqueduct. This provides different reference points for orientation—the village on the cycling route and the lake area and its aqueduct on the trail. The difference in length is 14 km.

To understand Meneou, it helps to consider the village’s features and its surroundings separately. The beach and historic water management system are in the village; the salt lake with its winter birdlife and the nature trail are in the surrounding area. The two routes also lead to different destinations and differ considerably in their stated lengths. This lets you consider the coast, local history, seasonal nature and the routes described as distinct aspects of the destination.
