Seline lies on a wide plain between the RT Pisak pebble beach and the impressive Mala Paklenica Canyon. Walking, hiking and cycling trails connect the town with Starigrad via picturesque hamlets in the mountainous hinterland. This creates a clear landscape framework for choosing where to stay: the beach, canyon and routes into the hinterland are distinct reference points for planning your trip.
Paklenica National Park: Entrance 2 in Seline
Entrance 2 to Paklenica National Park is located in Seline, in front of Mala Paklenica Canyon. Tickets purchased there are also valid for Entrance 1. The reception is open only during the peak season. The national park recommends Entrance 2 exclusively for experienced hikers; check seasonal accessibility before your arrival.
Between the pebble beach and the canyon
RT Pisak Beach in Starigrad and Seline is a partially developed pebble beach, accessible via a paved road. As local road regulations may change, it is worth checking access before your visit. Mala Paklenica Canyon is known for its wilderness and unspoiled nature. The Mala Paklenica stream is 12.5 kilometers long. A stone dam from one of the old mills still stands in Mala Paklenica. The beach, canyon, stream and this remnant of milling history offer different landscape and historical points of reference for your stay.
Cycling route, hike and planning your time
The cycling route Staza Br. 1 STARIGRAD–RELJANI, designated as a one-way route, runs from Jusupi downhill to the center of Seline and Pisak Beach. It passes through picturesque villages in the Velebit foothills, where traditional stone architecture and numerous cultural and historical sites help define the character of the route. There are also beautiful views of the mountains and sea. Local trail conditions can change, so it is a good idea to check them before your ride.
The hiking route Mala Paklenica (Seline) – Njive Lekine – Grabove Doline – Anića Luka – Velika Paklenica offers a different way to plan your time: it takes about six hours. The cycling route is designated as a one-way route running from Jusupi via Seline to Pisak; the hike is estimated to take about six hours. This lets you set aside the six-hour hike as a separate block of time and consider the cycling route based on its described course.
Cultural and historical sites by the canyon
The Church of St. James (Sv. Jakova) stands above Mala Paklenica Canyon. Together with the surviving stone mill dam, it points to other cultural and historical aspects of the landscape. The mill dam is the stone remnant of one of the old mills in Mala Paklenica; the church serves as a distinct landmark above the canyon. The church and mill dam add a cultural and historical dimension alongside the beach and routes.
The wider Starigrad Municipality area
Within the wider travel destination of Općina Starigrad, Paklenica National Park covers 95 square kilometers on the southern slopes of the Velebit range and includes the Velika Paklenica and Mala Paklenica gorges. Seline is therefore part of a landscape whose regional context extends beyond its local beach and canyon. The following examples are in Općina Starigrad and should not be understood as offerings located exclusively in Seline.
In Općina Starigrad, the preserved Mirila at Grabova dolina, within the national park boundaries, are associated with nearby hamlets. The Mirila of Općina Starigrad are a protected cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia. Fifteen watermills were built along the Velika Paklenica stream in the first half of the 19th century. The 1.5-kilometer Pjeskarica educational trail also runs along the eastern bank of this stream and is equipped with information boards and rest areas. The medieval, pre-Romanesque Church of St. Peter stands between Starigrad and Seline; it was probably built at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries.
