Novigrad combines a natural pebble beach and water activities with a layered history: an Illyrian hillfort once stood on the site of Fortica Fortress, while churches and maritime traditions reveal other sides of the town. These are different perspectives on Novigrad, not a set itinerary.
Pebble beach and water activities
The natural pebble beach gives your stay a clear connection to the sea. There is an underwater educational trail where you can explore marine life. Kayaking, pedal boating, rowing and windsurfing are also among the activities available at the beach. The trail focuses on marine life, while the water sports offer different ways to enjoy activities on the water. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you are more interested in the underwater world or in water sports.
Fortica and the history of Novigrad
Fortica Fortress stands on a hill above Novigrad. An Illyrian hillfort stood on this site, dating from between 2000 and 1000 BC. A much later event is associated with the fortress: in 1386, Queen Mary of Hungary and Croatia and her mother, Elizabeth, were imprisoned there. Fortica is listed as a protected cultural property of Croatia. The span of time from the prehistoric site to this event makes Fortica a distinctive historical focal point in Novigrad.
Churches and architecture
The churches also offer distinct historical and architectural highlights. Sv. Kate is the oldest church in Novigrad; the Lika-Krbava magnate and Croatian Ban Butko Kuriaković had it built in 1393. The Parish Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a neo-stylistic stone building made of stone from Novigrad, in the shape of a Latin cross. The church also houses a 16th-century votive statue of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows. When choosing cultural themes to explore, you can consider the age of Sv. Kate, the form of the parish church and the story of its sacred artwork.
Maritime history and mussels
Novigrad’s maritime character is evident beyond the beach. KUĆA DEŽDERATOVICA is located in Novigrad and is an interpretation centre about the maritime and fishing history of the area around Novigrad. This offers a different focus from water activities: here, the subject is the past of maritime life and fishing. Mussels are also part of local tradition. The “Okusi Novigradske dagnje” festival is traditionally held every year. Mussels prepared for the festival are freshly caught beforehand by experienced fishermen. If the festival is one of the reasons for your trip, check the specific event dates in advance.
