Rovanjska is located in a bay at the end of the Velebit Channel. The town combines a clear connection to the coast with natural and cultural attractions: Modrič Cave lies in the area of Rovanjska, and the medieval Church of St. George stands right by the sea. Views of sunsets and proximity to Velebit, with its parks, caves, walking and cycling routes, complete the picture. When choosing where to stay, you can weigh whether the coast, exploring nature or the historic building should be the main focus.
Coast, beaches and landscape
Rovanjska has two named beaches, Rovanjska and Splovina. The bay at the end of the Velebit Channel provides the landscape setting; views of sunsets are also part of the townscape. Facilities and conditions at the beaches may vary seasonally. Therefore, take the travel season into account if a beach visit is important to your plans. Nearby, the proximity to Velebit adds parks, caves, walking trails and cycling routes to the coastal focus.
Modrič Cave
Modrič Cave lies in the area of Rovanjska and is protected as a geomorphological natural monument. It extends for 829 metres. Its protected status and extent make it a distinct natural attraction alongside the coast. In the regional context of the Municipality of Jasenice, suitable equipment and an expert guide are required to explore it. These two requirements are part of the planning, not merely optional extras.
Church of St. George and the Mali Kamenjar cycling route
The Church of St. George stands in Rovanjska directly on the seashore. The medieval building retains its original half-cross shape, a distinctive elliptical dome and a barrel vault. Along with its seaside location, these features give the building its own architectural profile. On the Mali Kamenjar cycling route, you can turn at an intersection towards the centre of Rovanjska to visit the church on the beach. On the return to Modrič, the route follows an old main road lined with traditional natural-stone kerbs. Modrič Cave lies right by the relevant intersection on the cycling route. The church, cave and stone kerbs thus represent different points of interest: coastal architecture, a natural monument and the road layout.
Ribarska noć: programmes in 2022 and 2023
At Ribarska noć in Rovanjska, dishes made from local fisheries and aquaculture products were prepared on 11 August 2022. In 2023, Ribarska noć continued as one of three gastronomic events featuring seafood within the “U zagrljaju mora” project. While the preparation of local products was the focus in 2022, the 2023 programme places the event within a series of gastronomic occasions.
Beyond Rovanjska: Municipality of Jasenice
The regional context of the Municipality of Jasenice adds further natural and historical attractions. Modrič, the westernmost part of the Municipality of Jasenice, is considered a starting point for hikes to Sveto brdo, at 1,752 metres the second-highest peak of Velebit. The Majstorska cesta connects Sv. Rok in Lika with Obrovac in Dalmatia. It was ceremonially opened on 4 October 1832; the historic road is 41 kilometres long in total, of which 24 kilometres run through the Municipality of Jasenice. This allows Rovanjska’s coastal focus to be complemented by a hiking destination and regional road history in the wider travel area.
