In Sveti Đurađ, local wine and carnival traditions meet routes through the landscape. A prominent landmark is the Chapel of St. George: it is mentioned both in connection with the “Virovitički vidici” circular walking route and at the Vincekovo celebration. The area also offers medieval local history and attractions in the wider region. This lets you balance culture, trails and landscapes according to your own interests, without conflating local and regional destinations.

Chapel, Views and Local History

The branch church in Sveti Đurađ is dedicated to St. George. From the Chapel of St. George, the “Virovitički vidici” route offers views as far as Hungary. This circular walking route also includes viewpoints in Sveti Đurađ and the local chapel. Before setting out, it is advisable to check current trail conditions.

A shelter with benches and tables was installed at the viewpoint in Sveti Đurađ in 2018. If you would like to include these facilities in your plans, check before your visit whether they are still there. This information describes the installation at the time, not the current state.

The dates relating to local and church history also tell of different periods: Sveti Đurađ has been mentioned under various names in medieval sources since 1280. The parish is first documented in 1332. The two dates therefore refer to different historical contexts and can be read together as a glimpse into the area’s long history.

Walking Trails, Cycling Route and Wine Road

The routes differ in how they are described. “Virovitički vidici” is a circular walking route with viewpoints and a chapel in Sveti Đurađ. The “Podravski krug” cycling route is 63 kilometres long and leads to Sveti Đurađ, where it reaches the foothills of the Bilogora Mountains. These details show the different ways to explore the landscape, without specifying how long the routes take to walk or cycle.

The “Virovitički vidici” Wine Road also offers a regional perspective: it begins at the edge of Golo Brdo, runs through Podgorje and Sveti Đurađ, and continues to Antunovac and Milanovac. The county road Ž4020 is also useful for orientation. It connects Golo Brdo, Sveti Đurađ and road D5; the listed section is 4.8 kilometres long. This distance describes the road section, not journey time.

Wine Customs, Carnival and Repovača

The “Sveti Vinko” winegrowers’ and fruit growers’ association from Virovitica celebrates the feast day of St. Vincent every year in Sveti Đurađ together with the Virovitica City Tourist Board. At the celebration in January 2023, events included a mass at the Chapel of St. George, the ceremonial pruning of grapevines and sprinkling sausages with wine. If you would like to experience the celebration, check the date in advance.

The local Pokladni svatovi carnival custom involves men and women switching roles. The cultural association KUU “Franjo Ebling” also organizes “U Varoš na poklade,” a folklore event featuring the carnival customs of Sveti Đurađ. The association is also connected with another local tradition: it revived the traditional production of Repovača. This very strong fruit brandy is something of a trademark of the area. These traditions show different facets of local cultural life, from carnival folklore to wine and fruit growing.

More Trails in the Wider Region

In the wider region around Sveti Đurađ, near the Virovitica ponds, is the four-kilometre “Virovitička Bilogora” educational trail. A leisurely walk around the trail takes about an hour and a half and includes eleven information boards about the flora and fauna of Virovitička Bilogora. The ponds form a series of nine bodies of water and are considered one of the region’s richest fishing areas; recreational and sport fishing is possible there year-round. This excursion adds a distinct nature and fishing dimension in the wider area to the local routes.
