In the wider destination of Općina Tisno, Tisno lies both on the mainland and on the island of Murter; a mechanical lifting bridge connects the two parts of town. The historic center is on the island side, below Brošćica Hill. In Tisno, paths through the old town meet a long waterfront promenade and a range of maritime activities.

Stone Houses, Lanes and Churches

In the historic center, irregular rural stone buildings stand alongside townhouses dating from the 18th century. Distinctive features include characteristic galleries, preserved sections of the original stone paving and the Katunarić Palace. The wider townscape is also striking: Dalmatian stone houses, narrow streets and broad squares are complemented by the long waterfront promenade. Restaurants mainly serve traditional dishes.

Several churches offer different windows into the town’s history. The parish church of the Holy Spirit was built in 1548 and restored in the Baroque style in 1640. The Church of St. Andrew was built in 1606 on the hill of the same name, south of the island-side settlement. The Church of St. Roch stands on the waterfront in the Rat district. The Gospe od Karavaja shrine includes a chapel built around 1720 on Brošćica Hill above Tisno. Other architectural landmarks include Tišnjanske Palače, which preserve eleven villas.

Gospe od Karavaja is also associated with an annual festival, celebrated on May 26, with pilgrims coming from the surrounding counties and further afield. The exact program may vary. In the wider destination of Općina Tisno, salted sardines and Dalmatian pršut with cheese and olives are considered Tisno’s culinary traditions.

Educational Trails, Cycling and Diving

For a stay focused on nature and outdoor activities, the Tisno–Jezera ecological educational trail offers a distinctive experience. It runs between the two towns and provides information about native flora and fauna. Designed as a lit promenade, it features themed rest areas introducing the plant and animal life of Murter Island. As infrastructure may change or be expanded, it is worth checking current conditions before setting out on a specific tour.

Three designated cycling routes pass through Tisno. If you are planning a bike ride, check route conditions and signage locally before setting off. On Murter Island, coastal paths can form a loop around the island that returns to the starting point; conditions on these paths may vary seasonally. This makes it possible to distinguish between an activity that specifically passes through Tisno and a longer loop on Murter.

The maritime offering also combines learning and activity: the educational trail in Sv. Andrija Bay runs along the Tisno–Jezera promenade and includes seven information panels. It supports both freediving and scuba diving. Organized dive centers in Tisno cater to beginners and experienced divers. Operators and seasonal availability may change; access and equipment arrangements should also be checked before a dive.
