Primošten combines seaside walks with beaches, culture and a distinctive cuisine. The waterfront promenade around the Old Town passes historic character and Mediterranean scenery, while opening up views of the sea. During your stay, you can choose to focus on a walk by the water or a break at the beach.
Promenade and Beach
The promenade around the Old Town is ideal for a stroll. History, a Mediterranean atmosphere and sea views define this route. If you would rather experience the character of the town from the beach, Velika Raduča offers a different setting: the pebble beach is approximately one kilometre long, shaded by a pine forest, and adapted for children and visitors with special needs. Its approximate length and pebble shore give the beach a different profile from the waterfront promenade.
Culture in the wider destination of Općina Primošten
The wider destination of Općina Primošten also encompasses the historic character of Staro selo and several cultural sites. The Old Town of Primošten, Staro selo, was originally the island of Capocesto, also known as Gola glava. It was later connected to the mainland by a causeway built from fill. In the old town centre, paved streets with Šalizi and old stone houses have been preserved.
The Church of St George is protected as an immovable cultural property of the Republic of Croatia; its present, larger form was built in 1760. The single-nave rural Church of St Roch is also protected and stands in a landscaped park. The two churches thus differ in their design and surroundings. Primošten lace is part of the festive tradition and has been part of the traditional costume for centuries; it was first mentioned in writing in 1550. The Pekljica lace-makers’ association offers lace-making courses and demonstrations and has been holding lace workshops at Primošten Primary School for years. Dates may vary.
The Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto in Primošten is part of international Marian pilgrimage routes associated with Loreto. On the eve of Primošten’s most important feast, the Svetkovina Gospe od Loreta, fires spelling out the words “Ave Maria” are lit around the parish church and on Mount Gaj. The specific programme may vary.
Views and Routes
In the wider destination of Općina Primošten, a statue stands at the Our Lady of Loreto viewpoint on Mount Gaj. Including its base, it is 17 metres high. At sunset, the view stretches from there over the Primošten peninsula and the Primošten and Šibenik archipelagos; visibility depends on the weather. In the wider destination of Općina Primošten, Mala Raduča beach offers a special view of Staro selo and is particularly suited to watching the sunset in the evening.
For routes with different destinations, the wider destination of Općina Primošten offers the 10 sela cycling route and the Gaj cycling route, Route No. 105. The first begins in the centre of Primošten and climbs towards the village of Supljak. Route 105 leads to Mount Gaj and the statue of Our Lady of Loreto and offers views of the Primošten vineyards. The routes described therefore differ both in their direction and in their viewpoints. Check route and road conditions locally; they may change seasonally.
Primošten Cuisine and Babić Wine
Primošten’s culinary tradition has a Mediterranean character, including fresh fish, seafood, olive oil and locally grown vegetables. Traditional konobas also serve typical regional dishes. Babić is the signature red wine; visitors can taste it at local wineries. In the wider destination of Općina Primošten, Vinas Mora winery in Primošten produces natural wines from native grape varieties, including Babić, as well as from other local grapes. Visitor arrangements may change, so it is advisable to check current options before visiting.
A stay in Općina Primošten also includes activities on the water: boats can be rented with or without a skipper at several beaches in Primošten. Availability may vary.
