Cetina can be understood through two distinct focal points: the source of the river of the same name and the ruins of the Church of Sv. Spasa. Together, they give your trip a clear direction: natural landscapes or early medieval cultural heritage. If you are looking for a hotel in Cetina, you can first decide which of these themes you would like to focus on during your stay.

River Source and the Vrela Cetine Spring Area

The Cetina River rises at an altitude of 385 metres on the northwestern slopes of Dinara, near the village of Cetina. The Vrela Cetine spring area, with its three large springs—Veliko vrilo, also known as Glavaš, Vukovića vrilo, and Batića vrilo—is a separate feature. These details refer to different points of reference: the altitude and location describe the river’s source, while the three names refer to springs within the Vrela Cetine complex.

Vukovića vrilo is known for its clear blue-green karst water, which emerges from a speleological formation. The Cetina springs form the protected hydrogeological natural monument of Vrela Cetine. The area covers 29.81 hectares and has been protected as a landscape of special importance since 1972. Within the wider travel destination of Općina Civljane, Vukovića vrilo is considered the westernmost of the three large springs. For a nature-focused visit, it is therefore worth distinguishing between the individual spring feature of Vukovića vrilo and the protection status of the entire spring complex: one refers to the characteristic water feature, the other to the protected landscape.

Church of Sv. Spasa and Cultural Heritage

The ruins of the Church of Sv. Spasa are located in Cetina and date from the 9th century. The western tower still stands; the church is also considered one of the best-preserved monuments of early medieval religious architecture in Croatia and is listed in the Croatian Register of Cultural Property. More than 1,100 graves have been found around the church. This figure refers to the surrounding area and adds an archaeological dimension to the preserved western tower and the building’s history.

Other structures within the wider travel destination of Općina Civljane add to its cultural setting. The Orthodox Church of Hram Vaznesenja Gospodnjeg in Cetina was built in 1940; it is a separate, much later church building and should not be confused with the 9th-century Church of Sv. Spasa. Pločasti most consists of 33 almost regular stećak slabs and is a low, simple stone bridge. It is considered a unique example of a river crossing made with stećak slabs. The historic bridge is no longer in use.
