Varaždin’s Baroque character is reflected in more than individual façades: the historic Old Town combines Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical architecture in a richly layered urban landscape. Palaces, museums and landscaped green spaces offer different perspectives, from architectural history to crafts and nature.

Old Town, Palaces and Architectural History

The palaces shape the city’s Baroque character; their façades are a striking visual feature of the historic Old Town. Palača Sermage acquired its Rococo exterior during a renovation in 1759. Its preserved courtyard serves as a venue for theatre and dance performances during the summer months; the specific program may vary.

Stari grad is considered Varaždin’s most important historic building. Construction of the complex took place intermittently from the 14th to the 19th century. The central tower contains Gothic benches and canopies. Stari grad is also home to the oldest cultural history department of the Varaždin City Museum, presented in period-appropriate rooms.

The Hrvatsko narodno kazalište u Varaždinu also brings together architecture and theatre history: Hermann Helmer designed the building, which was constructed in the historicist style in 1873. The first performance at the new theatre was the drama “Poturica,” which premiered in Croatian on September 25, 1873. Varaždin Cathedral, meanwhile, forms the central part of a former 17th-century Jesuit complex. The entire former Jesuit complex was completed in 1656.

Museums and Special Collections

The Muzej hrvatskog vatrogastva focuses on the history of firefighting and fire protection in Croatia. It is the only museum in Croatia with a permanent exhibition on this subject. The exhibition traces the development of firefighting from the second half of the 19th century to the present day; the museum’s collection comprises around 1,200 objects.

The Gradski muzej Varaždin brings together the departments of archaeology, history, cultural history, ethnography and entomology. The Galerija K10 offers a different perspective on collecting, with 225 ceramic artworks from 45 countries. The size of the collection may change.

Varaždin City Cemetery is protected as a monument of park architecture and is a cultural asset. Herman Haller designed and laid it out in the style of a French park. For insight into the cemetery’s cultural history, the ARTOUR mobile app offers interactive routes, stories and interesting facts; check the availability of the app service in advance. The Muzej hrvatskog vatrogastva and the City Cemetery offer different perspectives: the former on the development of a craft and fire protection, the latter on park design and cultural heritage.

Crafts and Cultural Events

At Trg tradicijskih obrta in the city center, visitors can learn about traditional craft techniques, buy locally made products and mint a good-luck coin. Demonstrations include traditional shoemaking. During the main season, workshops on traditional culture take place on Saturday mornings, covering activities such as gingerbread decoration, lace-making and traditional jewelry-making.

An international animation film festival for children and young people is devoted exclusively to animation created by children and young people. Each year, the program includes workshops, lectures, accompanying animation film screenings and exhibitions in the historic Old Town. Dates and specific program items vary. At Varaždinske barokne večeri, the cathedral traditionally serves as the festival’s main stage; here, too, the program varies from year to year.

Parks, the Drava and Routes

The green spaces also differ in design: Šetalište Vatroslava Jagića follows the English landscape garden style, combining dense plantings of tall trees with open lawns. At Park Ivana Pavla II., interpreted plant species and a water feature that imitates the Drava give the site its educational character.

The Dravska park-šuma in Varaždin County is a protected forest and natural excursion area with exceptional biodiversity. The Drava, its banks and the surrounding forests offer opportunities for SUP, rafting, mountain biking and off-road jeep activities; availability and providers may change. For cycling plans, the EuroVelo 9 route comes from the west through Slovenia and Maribor and passes through Varaždin. Check its course and signage before setting out. Another named route, “Od dvorca do dvorca,” leads from Varaždin’s Stari grad to Trakošćan Castle.
