The Veliko blato bird reserve in the Municipality of Povljana is a refuge for a wide variety of waterbirds, especially during the breeding, migration and wintering seasons. A total of 143 bird species have been documented at Veliko blato. The reserve has a birdwatching tower and an information board; check the condition of these facilities before your visit.
Veliko blato is two kilometres from Povljana, along the paved road from Povljana to Vlašići. It is worth checking local access conditions before setting out. The Vidikovac viewpoint, on the road from Povljana towards Prutna, offers a view of the town and its surroundings.
Cycling routes between ridges, salt pans and karst
Of the 14 cycling routes that cross the island of Pag, four run through the Municipality of Povljana. The Prutna cycling route follows the rocky ridge of the Prutna peninsula and offers views of Stara Povljana Bay. The Smokvica cycling route begins one kilometre from Povljana, on the road to Stara Povljana Bay, and ends in the fishing village of Smokvica.
A cycling route towards Old Pag passes salt pans and is used by pilgrims from Povljana on the Assumption pilgrimage. Another route runs through a small wood by Lake Segal and continues northeast through karst terrain. The route descriptions therefore feature different landmarks and landscapes. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Beaches with different features
Perilo is a sandy beach with shallow water that is suitable for water sports and especially for picigin. Livade is also a sandy beach, but with very shallow water; it is suitable for families with small children. The descriptions of the two beaches thus highlight different features: water sports and picigin at Perilo, and very shallow water and family suitability at Livade.
Mali Dubrovnik is a pebble beach with the Viverone promenade, a changing cabin and a shower. Beach facilities may change seasonally; check what will be available during your trip before visiting. There is a water park and pedal boat hire at Dubrovnik beach. It is best to check in advance whether these activities will be operating during your visit.
Lake Segal lies west of Povljana, next to Dubrovnik beach. The lake contains therapeutic peloid sediment; describing it as therapeutic should not be taken as medical advice. Behind the lake, walking paths lead through the forest. The description thus connects the lake with a landscape you can also explore on foot.
Klapa tradition and churches
The klapa gathering “Povljana u pismi” has been held every year since 2002 in early July, in front of the church in St George’s Square. The exact dates and programme vary; check the dates for the year of your visit. Its regular timing makes the gathering a recurring cultural event, though this does not mean that each edition has a specific programme.
The churches also offer different historical points of reference. The Church of St Martin is considered a particularly valuable monument of medieval architecture. The parish church of St George was built in 1765. Together, these details represent two different aspects of religious architecture in Povljana: the medieval classification of St Martin’s Church and the specific construction year of St George’s Church.
Summer winds for windsurfers
The summer maestral is considered suitable for windsurfers. When it picks up in the afternoon, it allows for faster windsurfing. Wind strength varies from day to day, so the description does not promise consistent conditions. The birdlife, various cycling routes, beaches and klapa tradition each offer a different point of reference when choosing experiences in the Municipality of Povljana.
