Knežev dvor in Babino Polje was built in 1554 and houses the “Biskup” ethnographic collection. It features household and decorative items, family photographs, and memories of island traditions. As the island’s first and currently only ethnographic collection, “Biskup” gives the town a tangible cultural landmark. If you are planning a visit, check access arrangements in advance.
History in Babino Polje
Another historical landmark in the town is the 15th-century Church of Saint Blaise. Together, the collection and the church offer different points of interest: the collection focuses on everyday objects and traditions passed down through generations, while the church is a religious building with its own distinct date.
The Bay and Odysseus’ Cave
Sutmiholjska Bay, with its beach, is located near Babino Polje. Odysseus’ Cave is also close to the town; it is associated with the legend of Odysseus and the nymph Calypso. The walking trail from Babino Polje to the cave is not very demanding and is also suitable for parents with young children. As trail conditions can change seasonally, it is advisable to check the latest conditions before setting out.
Mljet in a Wider Context
On Mljet, Veliko jezero and Malo jezero are notable landscape features: these are two deeply indented bays known as lakes and connected to the open sea by the Solinski Channel. On an island in the southern part of the Great Lake are a Benedictine monastery and the Church of Saint Mary. The monastery was built between 1177 and 1198; the central section of the church has retained its Romanesque style. Opening hours and boat connections may vary by season. Check the current options if you plan to visit.
For hikers, the Mljetska planinarska obilaznica offers another perspective on the island: the route runs from the national park area to the island’s center and is marked with trail signs and stamps at checkpoints. Check trail conditions before setting out. Polače is also home to the remains of a Roman palace and an early Christian church dating from the 5th to 6th centuries. Mljet thus offers a glimpse of archaeological evidence alongside religious and ethnographic history.
The cuisine also offers a glimpse into regional traditions: Mljetski makaruli is a traditional pasta dish with homemade goat’s cheese, garlic, and olive oil. Whether the dish is available depends on the restaurant. The island’s only ferry terminal is in Sobra. As schedules vary by season and may change, check departures for your travel dates.
Practical Information
