The settlement pattern of Brestova Draga is defined by older buildings featuring elements of traditional construction. They are scattered along the road across a gently sloping karst landscape. This offers two distinct focuses for planning a trip: the history of the Karolina Road and the various routes that pass through or include Brestova Draga.

Settlement Pattern and the Karolina Road

The Karolina Road was built in the first half of the 18th century as Croatia’s first road connection between the Pannonian and Adriatic regions; it is 105.6 kilometres long. Between Belo Selo and Brestova Draga, it reaches its highest point at 970 metres. Its history includes the Fajeri: 13 stone supports for a wooden viaduct built along the Karolina Road in 1732. The Fajeri are on the original route between Brestova Draga and Slavica, which is now a forest road. They can be reached from either place. Road conditions may vary after rain; take this into account when planning your trip.

MTB and Hiking Routes

The E7 MTB stage runs from FuĹľine via Lokve, Brestova Draga, Rudine and Mrkopalj to Delnice. The total elevation gain for the entire stage is given as 650 metres; its highest point is at 950 metres and its lowest at 710 metres. These figures apply to the E7 stage, not just the section through Brestova Draga. The 970-metre high point of the Karolina Road and the 950-metre high point of the E7 refer to different route details.

For hiking, the Sunger–Brestova Draga–Bitoraj loop is another specific option: it is 20.1 kilometres long and passes Bitorajske Bijele stijene and Bitoraj. For this loop, the distance is provided; for the E7 stage, total elevation gain and elevation points are also given. Route conditions may vary; check them before setting out.

Route 727 is named Tragovima starih povijesnih cesta. It runs from Lokve via Brestova Draga and Slavica to the Roswell Cowboy Village, then returns to Lokve. This brings together different points of reference: the course of Route 727, the distance of the hiking loop and the elevation figures for the E7 MTB stage.

Prenka and the Wider Context

The Prenka ski area in Brestova Draga is classified as part of the Mrkopalj ski centre system. This classification is a planning designation and does not confirm that it is currently operating. If you plan to visit Prenka, check its operating status locally.

In the wider destination of Općina Mrkopalj, Bijele stijene and Samarske stijene are located within the municipality; both were declared strict nature reserves in 1985. Check the applicable regulations before visiting. Mrkopalj is considered the birthplace of Croatian skiing. Croatia’s first ski jump, “Pod Vrhin”, was built there in 1934.
