For Jelenje, cultural history and outdoor activities can be planned as two distinct areas of focus. The museum in the Municipality of Jelenje showcases rooms and everyday objects from the Grobinšćina region; Kovačija is dedicated to traditional blacksmithing. For hikers, the Hahlić mountain hut is a specific destination, while the Jelenjski-vrh cycling loop is rated difficult.

Museum, Church and Crafts

The museum collection in the Municipality of Jelenje comprises more than 500 exhibits. A period room and a kitchen show the interior of a 19th-century home in the Grobinšćina region. The exhibition also includes old household items, tools and folk costumes.

The Church of St Michael in Jelenje was built from 1812 to 1814; the finishing work was completed in 1821. The parish church has five bells, one of which dates from 1604.

Kovačija has been preserved in its original form with traditional blacksmithing equipment. Damir Marčelja demonstrates historic blacksmithing to visitors there. If you would like to see a demonstration, check availability before your trip.

Gašparov mlin still mills corn and wheat using traditional methods. Visitors can buy organic flour there and see old tools. Check the arrangements for visiting before your trip.

Memorials and Recurring Traditions

At the Spomenik Podhumskim Žrtvama memorial in Soboli, 91 shields commemorate 91 villagers who were killed in July 1942.

The traditional procession of the Grobnički dondolaši passes through almost all the settlements of Grobinština in the municipalities of Jelenje and Čavle, with the sound of bells, on the first weekend after Epiphany.

The Polenta and Cheese Festival takes place in late June. Its highlights are a large communal polenta and Grobnik cheese. The two events therefore take place at different times of the year: the bell procession on the first weekend after Epiphany, and the festival in late June. If you want to plan your travel dates around either event, check the exact dates and event programme for the relevant year.

Hiking and Cycling

The Jelenjski-vrh cycling route is a difficult 13.5-kilometre loop with 309 metres of elevation gain. Its distance, climbing profile and difficulty rating give you a concrete basis for deciding whether to ride it. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Hikers can reach the Hahlić mountain hut in the Grobničke Alpe from Podkilavac in the Municipality of Jelenje. It lies on the southern slope of Obruč at just under 1,100 metres and offers a view towards Kvarner Bay.
