Roman city remains, an early Christian religious building and a walking trail connecting cultural and natural points of interest: Omišalj offers a clear focus for a stay that is not geared solely towards the coast. When planning, the main question is whether you would like to set aside more time for archaeology, historical details, or routes and coves.

Walk between cultural heritage and coastal scenery

The Omišalj–Fulfinum Mirine–Fortičina–Omišalj walking trail connects the historic centre, Dubec Park, Pesja Bay, Sepen Bay, the Fulfinum and Mirine archaeological complex, and the remains of Fortičina Fortress. The route is suitable for families and recreational hikers who would like to combine exercise with cultural exploration. Those who want to include historical sites in their walk will find a route that brings together local history, a park and coves.

Roman and early Christian traces

The Municipium Flavium Fulfinum and Mirine complex comprises the remains of a Roman town from the second half of the 1st century and an early Christian basilica from the 5th century. Recognisable Roman building remains include sections of the forum, with a forum temple, a basilica and tabernae. This makes it possible to distinguish the Roman building remains from the later early Christian construction history without conflating the two basilicas.

The narthex, or entrance hall, of the Mirine Basilica has been restored and partially reconstructed. It houses an exhibition of movable archaeological artefacts as well as an early Christian sarcophagus in situ. These details add to the picture of the complex: alongside the remains of an ancient town stands the early Christian basilica, with its own architectural and historical context.

The Lapidarij Gallery displays a collection of movable cultural heritage connected with the monuments preserved in situ around the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary. Notable pieces include an inscription from 94 AD recording the construction of the Fulfinum aqueduct, and a gravestone from 1477 with a Glagolitic inscription and symbols of abbatial dignity. The Omišalj rose window also bears an exact date: carved from a single piece of stone, it dates from 1405.

The remains of the castle on FortiÄŤina Hill are associated with the princes of Krk; the complex was in use in the late 12th and 13th centuries. FortiÄŤina thus adds another historical period to the Roman and early Christian sites.

Park paths and time by the sea

Dubec Park is a monument to landscape architecture. Its development began gradually from 1925 onwards through the efforts of the local health resort commission. Existing footpaths were regulated, and native vegetation was arranged. The layout of the paths and the designed planting are therefore part of the park’s history, as is its designation as a landscape architecture monument.

Within the wider destination of Općina Omišalj, Dubec Park has a 995 m main path, as well as approximately 300 m of secondary paths and stone steps connecting Omišalj with the coastal promenade and bathing area. As path conditions can change, it is advisable to check their condition before your visit. Pesja Beach offers a different focus: pine trees provide shade, and there is also a picnic area and a volleyball court. These facilities may be maintained seasonally; check their condition before your visit.
