The Glagolitic Alley gives Gabonjin a clear cultural focus: this 200-metre educational walk leads from Gabonjin towards the Church of St Peter and is dedicated to the Glagolitic script. A park with stone sculptures and longer hiking and cycling options complement this short route. This lets you discover Gabonjin through different approaches to its history and landscape.

Glagolitic Script in Gabonjin

Gabonjin is an older settlement in the Dobrinj area, documented since the 14th century. The village lies below Sveti Petar Hill and its church. The Glagolitic Alley, Put glagoljaša, leads towards the church and is considered a distinctive cultural feature of the village. At 200 metres, it makes for a short, thematically focused walk: the emphasis is on Glagolitic heritage, not a long hiking route.

The Glagolitic Park opened in 2010 at the initiative of the local community to preserve and present the Glagolitic script and its historical period. Its sixteen stone sculptures depict significant moments in local and national history, as well as people associated with the Glagolitic tradition. A Glagolitic Trail in the area around Gabonjin also features 37 Glagolitic letters. Together, these places and trails offer different ways to engage with the same script tradition: via a short educational walk, sculptures or individual letters along a trail.

The etno workshop also draws on Glagolitic heritage. Small souvenirs are made there on wood and stone surfaces decorated with carved Glagolitic letters. Another historical landmark is the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the village centre, built in the mid-20th century. The Church of St Peter on the hill and this church in the centre are two clearly distinct landmarks for a walk through Gabonjin’s cultural history.

Hiking and Cycling

For a longer hike, the 13.9-kilometre circular route “Tracing the Legends and Abandoned Villages of the Dobrinj Area” leads to the Glagolitic Park in Gabonjin. The route combines hiking with a specific destination in the village. Check trail conditions and access before setting out. At 200 metres, the Glagolitic Alley is a much shorter way to discover the script tradition on foot.

The B-426 “Through the heart of Krk Island” passes through Gabonjin and is a 39.4-kilometre road-cycling route. It is classified as a moderately difficult road route and follows a paved existing road. The options therefore differ not only in length, but also in mode of travel and level of difficulty: the short walk leads to Glagolitic culture, the circular route is a hike, and the B-426 is a longer road route of moderate difficulty. Check the road surface and conditions before cycling.

Cultural Sites in the Wider Destination of Općina Dobrinj

Other cultural sites are located in the wider destination of Općina Dobrinj. In Dobrinj, the Ethnographic Collection can be visited during the summer months; at other times, you must register in advance by phone with the Municipality of Dobrinj. Dobrinj’s Church of the Holy Trinity is also used as an exhibition space for artefacts from the Dobrinj area. It is also home to the Maskeron, a striking sculpture of a man’s head, believed to date from 1738 and to have been made by a local folk artist. The Parish Church of St Stephen in Dobrinj is one of the oldest parish churches and is mentioned in a Glagolitic document from 1100. Its sacred collection includes liturgical objects, paintings and sculptures dating from the 14th to the 19th century. In Klimno, the Church of St Clement preserves a protected wooden Renaissance polyptych depicting the Mother of God, the Child and the saints. These places broaden the perspective on the cultural history of the wider destination, while Gabonjin itself is especially shaped by its Glagolitic heritage, churches and trails of different lengths.
