Vid offers a gateway to the history of ancient Narona, revealed through archaeological finds and early Christian traces. At the Narona Archaeological Museum, temple remains stand alongside sculptures and mosaics; churches and a tour of the city walls add further perspectives. At the same time, the Norin shapes the landscape around Vid. You can explore different themes during your stay: Roman history, early Christian evidence, and nature by the river.

Narona at the Archaeological Museum

Excavations at Plečašove štale brought the remains of the Augusteum and 17 marble sculptures to light. The sanctuary was built around 10 BC. At the Augusteum, you can trace the rise and fall of the imperial cult in one place. Marble statues of Roman emperors and their family members were displayed there on a larger-than-life scale. The main exhibition hall of the museum contains the in situ remains of the Roman temple, along with statues of emperors and their family members above a black-and-white mosaic floor.

A geometric black-and-white mosaic from the sanctuary is considered one of the earliest Roman mosaics in Dalmatia. A mosaic displayed under glass probably belonged to a Roman taberna. The rest of the collection also brings the city’s history to life: around 900 exhibits date from the late third half of the 3rd century BC to the 15th century. The collection spans the Greek-Hellenistic, Roman, Early Christian, and Venetian periods, offering insights into Narona and daily life from the Hellenistic period through the late Middle Ages.

Early Christian Traces in Vid

Early Christian evidence in Vid includes a 5th-century baptistery with an exceptionally well-preserved octagonal baptismal font. On Vid Hill stands the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, locally known as Gospa Ledena, at the acropolis of ancient Narona. The Church of St. Vid displays finds from the early Christian church and the medieval cemetery at the site. Architectural remains of the early Christian church are visible in and around the church.

Archaeological Sites and Visits

The Narona Archaeological Museum includes a small archaeological park outside the building. The museum terraces offer a chance to view stone cultic and funerary monuments. Erešove bare is a preserved archaeological site open to visitors, which you can visit as part of a tour of Narona’s city walls in Vid. Erešova kula is an open-air epigraphy museum with Latin inscriptions and other monuments of ancient Narona.

Cultural Program and Practical Information

The Narona Archaeological Museum is accessible to visitors with disabilities and to people who have difficulty with stairs. Advance notice is required so that assistance can be arranged. The museum library is open to the public on request.

The museum’s outdoor terraces host the Naronitansko Cultural Summer, featuring theater performances, exhibitions, concerts, and book presentations; the program may vary from year to year. Rimska noć in Naroni is a recurring event in Vid that brings Roman history to life through workshops, interactive content, exhibitions, tastings, and evening shows. Dates and program vary from year to year.

Norin, Landscape, and Cuisine

Vid Hill is surrounded by a green valley of reeds and sedges, crossed by the Norin. The river is a tributary of the Neretva. This means that, alongside the archaeological sites, the river landscape offers its own travel experience. Dishes associated with Vid include eel brudet and fried frogs. Whether you can try them depends on local establishments and the season.
