The Municipality of Bošnjaci brings together natural heritage and clearly defined themes from cultural history. Spačva Forest is part of the municipality’s natural heritage; in Bošnjaci, a parish church and an installation in its courtyard tell of the veneration of Saint Martin. Traditions linked to different seasons are also part of the picture. Which of these matters to your travel plans depends on whether you want to focus on nature, cultural heritage or an event date.

Forest and river as natural themes

The natural heritage of the Municipality of Bošnjaci includes Spačva Forest. Another distinctive feature of the landscape is Bošnjački vjerovi, which are among the sources of the Spačva River. Forest and river source thus stand as two distinct natural themes: one points to a forest area, the other to the beginning of a river. If you choose the Municipality of Bošnjaci for its natural features, you can take both aspects into account without treating them as a single excursion destination.

Church, cultural heritage and the Martin tradition

The Roman Catholic parish church of St Martin, Bishop, was built from 1792 to 1794 and is an immovable cultural asset. The Stopa Svetog Martina is located in the church courtyard. It marks a cultural and historical route connecting places with churches, cathedrals and chapels dedicated to Saint Martin. The church building and the Stopa therefore offer different points of interest: architectural history on the one hand, and its place in the wider Martin tradition on the other.

The “Slavonska kuća” also places the municipality’s traditions in the spotlight. The Centre for the Promotion of Agriculture and Rural Development opened to visitors in May 2021. The themes presented include embroidery, crafts, traditional trades, gastronomy and historic ways of life. Cultural heritage thus extends beyond sacred architecture to include traditional activities and everyday culture.

In the wider destination of Vukovar-Srijem, the Bošnjaci Forestry Museum is another point of interest. It presents the flora and fauna of the Spačva Basin and the tradition of organised forestry through exhibits and historic work tools. Visits are by prior arrangement.

Event traditions and when to visit

The “Open Bošnjaci” chess tournament has a tradition dating back to 1995; it is traditionally held in January. The tradition of the night-time small-sided football tournament dates back to 1966 and is associated with the summer months. The two events offer different seasonal reference points. If either tournament is important to your trip, check the current event dates before making plans.

When looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide what you want to focus on: should your trip centre on Spačva Forest and the municipality’s natural features, the Martin tradition and architectural history, or a possible event date?

More cultural destinations in Vukovar-Srijem

As additional regional context, Vukovar-Srijem offers other cultural themes. In Ilok, Iločko ljeto is a traditional event dedicated to preserving and promoting the culture, language and traditions of the Slovak national minority. At the Old Cellars of Ilok next to Odescalchi Castle, hosts guide visitors through parts of the cellar complex and organise wine tastings; prior arrangements may be required.

An archaeological site in the wider destination of Vukovar-Srijem is Vučedol, located four kilometres downstream from Vukovar. The Museum of Vučedol Culture is located at the archaeological site on the banks of the Danube and presents its historical and archaeological significance in a contemporary way. These regional cultural themes complement the local selection without replacing the natural and cultural features of the Municipality of Bošnjaci.
