Petrinja offers a variety of ways to explore nature and culture: a walking route, an extensive forest area and cultural sites with their own history. This lets you plan your stay around the focus you prefer. If you’re looking for exercise, you can consider the Petrinja Promenade as a defined circuit; if you’re interested in the landscape, turn your attention to Hrastovačka Gora. When choosing a hotel, it helps to weigh up these interests in advance.

Nature and exercise

The Petrinja Promenade is a 6.6-kilometre circular route of moderate difficulty. Its endpoint is the Strossmayer Promenade, a protected architectural park with the Parish Church of St. Lawrence and a fountain. If you want to include the route in a detailed itinerary, check its length and difficulty rating again. This gives you two distinct options: a clearly defined circular route and an extensive natural area.

Hrastovačka Gora covers most of Petrinja’s municipal area and reaches 415 metres at Cepeliš above Hrastovica. Almost all of Hrastovačka Gora is covered by beech and chestnut forests, with numerous small springs on its wooded slopes. This takes you beyond a single route: the Gora offers a broad landscape experience, while the promenade is a circular route with a specific length and difficulty rating.

The Petrinjčica and its basin also offer a natural history perspective. This combination of biodiversity and geological history appeals to travellers who want to include natural history alongside forests and exercise in their travel plans.

A description published in 2023 featured quad excursions from Petrinja, with guided rides and equipment provided. It lists the Kupa River and Hrastovačka Gora as destinations. If you want to include this activity in your plans, check current dates and availability with the provider in advance.

Architecture, pilgrimage route and tradition

The Parish Church of St. Lawrence was built in 1780 and rebuilt in 1995. It is located on the Strossmayer Promenade, which is also the endpoint of the Petrinja Promenade. The first day of the Camino Banovina pilgrimage route also ends there, at the parish church in the centre of Petrinja. So both the circular route and the pilgrimage stage lead to this place, but they offer different ways to plan your visit: a circuit and a day’s destination on a pilgrimage route. Dates for organised walks may vary; check them if you want to join a guided tour.

The Baroque Palace in Petrinja is considered a valuable example of 18th-century Baroque residential architecture in continental Croatia. The Stucka vessel is regarded as an original Petrinja souvenir and is associated with the pottery tradition of the 18th century. Together, these two subjects highlight different aspects of the cultural heritage: residential architecture and ceramics.

The Petrinjski Betlemaši custom has been protected as intangible cultural heritage since 2015. It is presented on Christmas Eve in Gajeva Street and the surrounding streets of Petrinja. If you want to experience this tradition, plan your visit for Christmas Eve.

Think in advance about which of these subjects you want to focus on, so your accommodation choice suits your plans.
